S&W 629-4 "Trail Boss" Can anyone tell me.....?

Greetings,
I saw a S&W 629-4 "Trail Boss" at a dealer the other day for $400.00. It's in very nice shape, has the wood finger groove grips, factory porting, and has had an action job of some variety, or at the very least some trigger work.

Can anyone tell me anything about the history of this particular model, when it may have been made, how many were made, etc. (Lew Horton model?) The price seems fair to me for such a nice piece, but I would like a second opinion if anyone's offering. I REALLY like the gun, and think shooting it would be very therapeutic! Any thoughts on this gun would be greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,
SM

How many variations was the Trail Boss made in? Mine had a 3 inch barrel and now along comes 4 inch and a 2.5 inch models.

Randy, I bet it didn't hurt to have it loaded with .44s from Garrett Cartridges now, did it? :^) I shoot them in my flat-top .44 Ruger BH. RKBA!

.41 Man, are you shooting our old SWCs or our new HAMMERHEADs? Have you taken any game with them yet? Send me an e-mail so I can communicate with you directly without having to annoy the members by making our comments public.

$400.00 sounds like a good price to me in the shape you describe. Just be sure to have grips that fit your hand properly and will help soak up the recoil.

I have a brace of .44Mag Mountain Guns and that short, light barrel will play HAVOC on your shooting hand with full power loads if you don't have good grips!!

Hope you get it and enjoy it!!! I do mine!!

Randy,
Your ammo sounds pretty effective. Actually, I've never run into a Grizzly Bear here in New Hampshire, although I did see a rather large skunk the other day. It would be fun to touch off some of your 310 grain Hammerheads in a gun like that trail boss though. Maybe if I buy it I'll consider buying some....warm up with some 240 Grain JHP & Blue Dot handloads first.

Incidently, I failed to mention the barrel on this particular gun is a 3". I'm still curious if anyone knows more about this paticular model. (Other than it's tempting me to buy it!)
Best Regards,
SM

G. Kennedy,
Thanks for the reply. I saw it after my last post. I know what you mean about the grips....this gun looks like it would hurt so good!

Can't tell you much about the Trail Boss, but one of the local shops has a slightly used 3" Magnaported version. They are asking $595 for it. That might explain why it's been there for over 2 months.

Good Luck...

Joe
