S&W 629-1 with white grips?

Howdy Six shooters,

I have a quick question about a Smith and Wesson 629-1. A local pawn shop has one for sale. It has what appear to be fake ivory grips with the S&W logo. Did S&W ever send any 629-1 out of the factory with white ivory grips, or are these after market add ons?

The pawn dude wants $900, which seems a bit high, but I am not sure. I remember a thread in January about a 629-1 going for around $575 or $600.?

The barrel length appears to be 6.5".

Thanks.

Smith never sold models with fake ivory grips.

And $900 is a mite high for a 629. I recently sold a model 29 pinned and recessed, non standard barrel, for $550. For $900 you should be looking at a Model 29 (blue) pinned and recessed, with presentation case and accessories, just to give you some idea.

Model 629s have yet to appreciate that much.

+1 Bob. Wyoredman - Look closer at those grips. The logo is probably similar but not identical to the S&W trademark. Several older brands of cheap plastic knockoff grips have logos that are deceptively similar to S&W or Colt.

OTOH I suppose that an enterprising (and dishonest) LGS owner may have taken the medallions off some old S&W grips and mounted them on fake ivory knockoffs to make them more appealing.

A few grip makers have used genuine S&W grip escutcheons by simply removing them from wood grips and installing them on the ivory, pearl, or whatever grip they wanted.

Hey guys,

Thanks alot for the info. I thought those grips looked a bit out of place. I am going to go back in an talk with the pawn dude about price. He is usually prety good on his prices, so maybe he knows something else I don't. Again, thanks for the info.
