S&W 617 in california???

For the past month, I have been doing research on what kind of hand gun I'd like to purchase as my first. And after countless hours of reading forums and websites I decided that the S&W 617 6" barrel 6 round capacity was the gun of my hearts desires.

I arrive at the local gun shop and ask him to give me a price on it and he quotes me at around ~540, whatever. That is fine and we go through the process of filling out the order. Well it turns out that when he calls his S&W distributer or whoever they call to get their firearms from, the distributer informs him that the 6 round cylinder S&W 617 cannot be sold in California, only the 10 round versions are legal. ACK! I was crushed.

So I did some looking online, and the Roster listed the "certified handguns for sale" according to the office of the attorny general in the state of california.
On this list there were two versions of the S&W617 in 6" barrel, the 617-5 and the 617-6. I am curious what the difference is between the 617-5 and the 617-6 (I'm thinking one is the 6 round and the other the 10 round). Is it possible that the distributer:
A: Had an out dated list
B: Was just trying to push the 10 round that I want no part of
or
C: I'm completely wrong in my assessment and I am just stuck in a crappy state where I can't get a decent DA .22 pistol.

SW can be odd about not submitting all their models for california's legalization BS. The only ones I've seen at the stores are 10shot models, but that might be because everyone wants the extra 4 shots

If the gun is on the approved list go here http://www.gunsamerica.com/ and do a search . Once you find the gun you want and it must match perfectly the model on approved list contact the seller and I would suggest only paying by credit card for your protection , Then find a local FFL to handle the trasaction at your end . The local guy will charge a fee and it will vary greatly from one location to another , If you have a decent business relationship with a local FFL start there . I usally give my guy about $25 for my internet deals

As smokin said, try the (3 big) gun auction/sales sites on the net . You can even search by state to find what's in CA and available.

Your stuck in a crappy gun ownership state, as am I. They killed the bolt action .50 Cal, saying it's an assault weapon.....eh..right? Have you ever seen anyone knock over a 7-11 using a 50 lb .50 Cal..I think not..

Well, I digress. Here in Kalifornia, you can go to the California DOJ website. click on firearms, and look up the approved firearms.

If, your law enforcememt, you are exempt. Which means you can just get about anything, if your agency allows it.

Amyway, a lot of firearms manufacuturers, will not even sell there guns in Kalifornia, because of the cost $$$ of the DOJ testing process.

It costs, real big $$$$ to test and destroy handguns to even get on the approved list.

Even then, there's even more Bull@$%#*!! in administrative paperwork!!

So, think about it, every S & W Revolver, that S & W makes would have to be tested by CA DOJ. I don't mean just one handgun for testing..more like 10 each...Good Luck!!
