S&W 617 bore scratch or something else?

Hi all,

I would appreciate some expertise from members of the forum.

I recently bought a .22 S&W 617 as a target/plinking gun and after recieving it, took it to the range and shot a few hundred rounds through it. Before shooting it, I wiped down the barrel and chamber with some cleaning pads and a jag.

When I got home, I noticed the crow/muzzle area isn't quite right. After cleaning it (brass brush and rod), what I saw was a small section of the lands, where the crown meets the barrel, appears marked up/scratched. The point where the crown and barrel meets appears to be flattened a bit and extends down the barrel a bit, as the picture shows.

Any option of what it could be and its impact on accuracy? The surface appears uneven... is it poor machining, or something else? The gun was brand new. I am not sure if it was there before I shot it as I wasn't impacting it as carefully.

Thanks!

Thanks guys. How do I tell if it's just leading? I tried cleaning it many times and carefully scrubbing it with a brass brush. It's kind of hard to tell but the sharp crown ledge appears leveled at that spot.

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether it's me or the guy that can't shoot accurate :)

To me, I don't really see a problem. I used to be concerned with any little marks and beat myself up over nothing.

I had a Browning Belgian Challenger that I had traded for. It was a used gun but really nice. It had a couple of rough marks in the rifling toward the middle of the barrel. I was concerned and tried and tried to scrub them away. Not really sure if it was a pit or leading.

Anyway I finally quit fooling with it. The gun shot like a dream.

If your gun shoots the way you want, just go with the flow.

If the mark gets progressively worse, then you might want to have someone look at it.

.22s do foul barrels pretty regularly. I am betting you don't have a problem.

Enjoy the gun.

I recommend emailing that picture to S&W and ask the experts opinion.
If they think it's a problem, they'll send you a shipping label so you can return it to the factory for warranty repairs.

This is something you need to address and not let go in case it is a problem.

If it's affecting the transition to the crown, then it's probably going to impact your accuracy. But I can't make out what it is - it's looks like a UFO to me.

You might want to remove the bullet from one of your 22 rounds and press it in there. That could give you an idea of the contour of that region.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I sent the picture to S&W and they said they also couldn't tell what it was, but are sending me a label to get it warrantied.

Any of you had experience with S&W warranty? How long does it normally take to get your gun back?

I can't wait to shoot it!!!

I thought I'd post an update. Just got my gun back from S&W.

They replaced the barrel and the crown/bore looks a lot better.

However, I was pretty shocked that they screwed up torquing in the barrel to the frame. It's completely obvious that they did not torque it in enough. In fact, it was done so poorly that the front sight appears tilted towards the right when looked at through the back sight. I placed the gun upside down on the table and you can tell they didn't align the gun when torquing the barrel in.

They also messed up the foam in my factory box and lost the integrated lock key that was also in the box.

Anyway, I'm pretty dissapointed/scared of the S&W warranty now and have just torqued the barrel in more myself.

All in all not a great experience.

That sucks. I would have called them back and asked them to do it right this time. As far as the keys go, they ask that you not send any thing other than the gun back to them but I'd still ask for a replacement key.

I would expect better from S&W than this.

What did you use to torque the barrel in?
