I thought they stopped making these for retail sale.

To my knowledge they did. Maybe new old stock, or one that was just really taken care of? Key would be to ask for the box and check the date on the box.

This is their new stock shelf. It's unfired and looks to be recently made. If it was old stock or used never fired, it is spotless.

And it's been there a while...(just now getting around to posting) So it's either not selling or they have several in stock.

And being in CO, it's one of the few 9mms that has more than 10rds in a full size.

I'd guess new old stock.

However, with the renewed interest in the 3rd gen autos since they've been discontinued I could see S&W deciding to do a limited (or maybe not so limited) run to capitalize on it. I've recently become more interested in the 3rd gen autos myself and if they would be to do a run of them I'd highly consider several (especially a 4000 or 3900 series compact, a stainless 908 or a 410/411). Though, they recently (i.e. about 2 years ago) completely stopped supporting the older guns, not even regular wear items like springs are being made or carried by S&W anymore. Also, what seems to be a renewed interest on some websites (mostly S&W related), probably isn't so widespread. So, realistically it probably isn't likely they did a run, and it is very likely NOS (if it isn't just a really clean used gun).

So I saw this earlier, but I waited til I had a computer to check it:

Houlton, ME

I can't say I've ever seen a picture of a 3rd gen S&W with "Houlton, ME" on it rather than Springfield, MA or seen one in person with those markings. I have had newer production S&W 1911s from Houlton, ME. To me that suggests a much more recent production date than those I typically find for the 3rd Gen Smiths. I did some Googling and found the following:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-semi-auto-pistols/482390-brand-new-3rd-gen-yes-bought-3953tsw-buds.html
http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-semi-auto-pistols/476105-cabelas-has-new-5946-a.html

The suggestion seems to be these could be a contract overrun or made for a contract that fell through, perhaps for NYPD? I'm not sure about made this very year, but they may well only be a few years old and just popping up on the market now. Interesting bit of trivia.

What I will say is a few months back I picked up a very nice 5904 and 6904 from Gunbroker for ~$400 each. These are American made metal framed pistols with excellent resets (the non-DAO variants) for awesome prices. Pretty great piece of Americana, and in working on the frame I found them surprisingly simple. There are still quite a few floating around:

People seem to like them.

My Aunt has a "Lady Smith" version she bought back in the 90s. I fired it years ago, but not much.

I was thinking this might be from a contract run, as I remember hearing some agencies are still using them.

NIB 5946, I'd have that bought in MINUTES...
hard to go wrong with a 3rd Gen S&W auto,
but even moreso a 15+1 in perfect condition...

Ditto; I recall reading that the 3rd-gen production tooling was being stored in Houlton but not being used there.

Velly intellesting, and I wonder if this has anything to do with the Walther "divorce" and the consequent discontinuation of PPK and PPK/S production there...

AFAIK the RCMP is still using these pistols, so there's a second theory.

Definitely a interesting pistol but I can see why it's still sitting in the case unsold. You still can stumble across 3rd gen Smiths in very good condition for $300 less so someone would really, really want this one. DAO might turn off people, too. Nice find though!

Wow, might be hard for me to walk away, but I probably would. I already own a 5903, so this is a little too similar to justify the price. However, there are a few other models that I wouldn’t mind seeing back in production, so S&W if you’re listening how about some .45acps, 9mm compact frames and maybe a few 10mms.

QUOTE: "... DAO might turn off people, too..."

Would me. But I'm very intrigued by the "Houlton, ME" stamping. carguychris posed some interesting, if not plausible, theories. I'd love to learn the answer-if there is one...

Y'all know me, the DAO-loving oddball, and I would take one but, I already have a 5943 SSV and a pair of 6946's to keep me occupied (even if they aren't true DAO hahahaha).

I saw a couple of these at Cabela's in Ohio --- not sure if new or used but they were in the new gun case. I assumed used.

So would lots of people, but making them now would be prohibitive, I think. The gun featured by the OP is one of the two-tone models with synthetic hammer and trigger. It's probably just as good as early models, but has a lot of cut corners. My favorite model was actually the second generation 659, which was one of their most beautiful guns (and it was featured on many television shows and movies). It just looked cool! But to make one now would be just too expensive. Look how much stainless 1911s are going for now. That's about what a modern S&W stainless 2nd/3rd gen auto would go for.

S&W second generation beauties, the 645 .45ACP
and the 659 9mm pistols. Heavy and probably very
expensive to produce nowadays.

Third generation 5906 9mm pistol. Like a tank but
who cares?

It's not though. Both the slide and frame are stainless. That's not two-tone, in the traditional sense. They stopped using chromed triggers and hammers after a period, if you mean those parts. The hammer and trigger are both still metal just a different process. In fact the MIM hammers are notably smoother in the pull than the older ones. Never really heard synthetic when talking of guns.

(of a substance) made by chemical synthesis, especially to imitate a natural product.
