S&W 5906 Chamber cracked!!

A friend was shooting his ex police issue 5906 yesterday with factory (Cor-bon 115) ammo and the chamber cracked. It was on the left side at the joint of the unlocking cam and the chamber, and it went from the front to the end of the chamber where it meets the barrel. There appears to be no damage to any other parts.

Until this time the gun had nothing but CCI Blazer (115 and 124), a little bit of 124 Hydra-shock and some Winchester white box through it. This includes the time it was owned and carried by the officer that used it as a duty gun.

Besides the often held opinion that S&W autos are not up to the same standards as other manufacturers autos (which I share), has anyone seen or heard of this failure? What would your opinion be as to how S&W might remedy this issue? Also, what might Cor-Bon do if it is determined to be an ammo problem? I don't remember any limitations against shooting +p in the 5906 and it had very little shot through it in its lifetime. Anyone know of a sourse for buying another barrel?

Thanks for any info/insight.

S&W will probably replace the barrel. Their metallurgists will probably want to examine it to determine the cause of the failure (materials, workmanship, abuse).

You might consider getting an after market barrel like Bar-Sto. Given S&W's quality control problems, sending the gun back to them may result in the same thing happening again at some point, with less than agreeable results. I also would have an S&W amorer check the entire pistol over before your friend fires it again.

I have fired several thousand rounds of COR-BONs 115s in a 5906 and 3913 with no problems at all! Sounds like a weak metal problem. Contact S&W and get your self a new barrel. Send the ammo back to COR-BON and ask them to run a pressure test on it.
