S&W 586 Questions

Hi all:

I have an opportunity to purchase a used 586-3 for $375.
It has definitely been fired but it appears to be in excellent condition. It has adjustable rear and adjustable front sights.

1) Is this a decent price?
2) Is there a drawback to firing pin on hammer design?
3) The dealer was trying to talk me into a Ruger GP 100 for only about $60 more. Are the newer guns (Ruger, S&W) "better" built?
4) Would the gun be able to handle the pressures of any commercial ammo?

Any opinions would be appreciated as this would be my first revolver. I have an HK USPc in .45.

Thanks,
Steve

Buy it. The 586 is a great revolver. No problems at all with a steady diet of .357 Mag. The firing pin on hammer revolvers are preferred by many. It has a better trigger than the GP-100 and is a better overall value.

Adjustable front sight???

GREAT PRICE FOR AN

EX CELLENT GUN. GRAP IT. DON'T LET THE DEALER TALK YOU INTO ANOTHER GUN THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST 357'S EVER MADE.

Let me add my buy recommendation also. The 586 is a good revolver, based on the L-frame which is a bit sturdier than the K-frames which so many people like. This puts it closer to the Ruger GP-100. Now the Ruger is a good gun also, but between the two, at that price differential, you are well-advised to get that Smith and get it NOW!

I would also like to add a "buy now" comment. The S&W
L-frame's are some of the most dependable firearm's in
recent history, coming from a long line of famed revolver's.
Able to with stand the hottest of .357 magnum load's, it
makes the model 581/681/586 and 686 a fan favorite!:D
The price seems a little steep for my area*; but the model
586 is extremely scarce, + the fact they are not making
them any more!:( So, I guess the $375 asking price isn't
so bad after all. :D

*FootNote: Generally can be found in LNIB condition here
in "The Deep South" from between $275-350 price range;
dependent on who is selling it.

As for a price point: new 686 guns (which is the SS twin of the 586) sell on line for about $500 give or take a bit, and sell for $550 west coast. I would buy a clean 586 at $375 in a heartbeat. I actually prefer the older guns with the hammer mounted FP and all forged parts. I would actually pay a "new" price for a like-new older SW because they had better parts and were much better fitted than their new guns.

I have a 586 and a GP100 and like them both. I feel slightly less recoil with the Ruger, maybe because of the grip. The 586 has a great feel to it and doesn't have quite as much bulk as the GP100.
I get about the same accuracy with both guns, possibly just a bit better with the 586.

I was lucky with the 586, I found it a couple years ago for $300 and it's in great shape.

General 586 question?

Just a curiosity question, I will soon have a 586 (no dash). What does the 586-3 have that the 586 doesn't? Mine has the "M" mods installed.

According to Supica and Nahas they were the following:

586-1 Radius stud package, floating hand.

586-2 Change hammer nose and associated parts.

586-M Product warning by S&W: M overstamped to signify a modification by the factory or warranty station for Models 586 and 586-1.

586-3 New yoke retention system.

I'd take a used 586 over a new gp100 at the same price.
Unless you're gonna hot load the ammo, in which case a blackhawk is in order.

Thank you all for your replies.

I am picking up the gun tonight and hope to shoot a few rounds at the club soon after.

I feel I have made a great choice thanks to all of you.

Cheers,
Steve
