S&W 57 in 41 mag

Can this gun be loaded up pretty hot or should I go on the light side? Not familiar with the strength of older Smiths.

Taurus, what do you mean by "pretty hot"??

I've had a Mdl. 57 for years, and handload for it. I killed a 400 pound Black bear with it, with my handload... and it was not a mild load. The 57 is a great revolver.

"Pretty hot"?????

Strength no problem. That gun is made on the same platform as the .44magnum. The .41 would have slightly more meat in the cylinder than the .44.

Taurus,

This may not be worth a damn too you; but I handloaded
a Smith 4" model 57 up using Sierra's 170 grain JHC and
W-W 630-P with loads starting out at 1300 fps. Grant it,
that's not really all that hot; but fired from a 4" it seems
like a sure hand cannon.:D :)

S&W 57 in 41 mag strength

No matter what age gun you have, a S&W is not as strong a Ruger.
I load my 4 inch 657 [Stainess] with a moderate load of 17.5 grains of A-2400 with a 210 grain JSP or Plated bullet. I tried 19.0 grains but it didn't seem to give me anything but extra recoil.

I own a 4" blue Model 57 Smith & Wesson .41 Magnum and don't worry about the mule just load the waggon.

It's basically the same gun as the .44 mag Model 29, except with a thicker cylinder and barrel so it's somewhat stronger than a Model 29. They're very fine examples of an N frame Smith & Wesson and are hard to come by these days.

Just picked up my Mod 57 S&W tonight! Love it! I like the weight and balance much better than my Taurus Raging Bull. Havn't decided which bullets/powder to get yet. Any suggestions? I would like to shoot cast[leadhead] for target. Thanks for all your replies!

Taurus, a good target/plinking/small game/varmit load in MY 57 is a 210 gr. hard cast SWC, with 7.5 grs Unique, and standard large pistol primer.

Lots of fun, and in a pinch, will do for a self defense load. (Note I said, "in a pinch.")

Have fun.

M58 and M57 since 1968; they have not had any problems of note; either Remington full loads or mine with 21 grs. H-110.
8 grs. Unique for cowboy shoots in Rugers.
