S&W 500 questions

8.5 US pounds = 3.855532 Kg

S&W has recently released a 4" (10.16 cm :D ) version of the Model 500. I guess they want to compete in the Mountain Gun market. I saw it but did not shoot it last weekend at our local Sports Fair in Norco, CA.

I did shoot a few rounds out of the 8" version, felt about like a 5" .44 Special, not as bad as .44 Magnum.

S/A it is extremely light and short - just think hard enough about pulling the trigger and Boom! :D

D/A it felt a lot like a 586 - long smooth typical S&W trigger.

8.5 pounds?!?

The 10.5" PC Hunter version weighs 82 oz, which comes to 5.13 pounds, which is about 2.33 kilos.

The standard 8 3/8" version weighs 72.5 oz, or 2055.4 grams.

The version with the 4" tube weighs 56 oz, or 3.5 pounds, or roughly 1.6 kilos.

DA trigger pull is typical new Smith; about 10-11 pounds DA, and a very crisp and light SA on which it'd be hard to guess the weight without a scale, but I'd reckon somewhere in the high threes or low fours.

They also have a 6.5" (IIRC) Hunter. Our manager pulled this "small" (as compared to the normal suitcase the 500s come in) out and said "Gunny, you haven't seen this yet." I opened the case and it wasa "Small 500 Hunter". Don't know the weight nor anything else as I have no interest in the 500 personally.

That gun was already sold prior to our receipt, as is three of the 4" and two of the 10.5 Hunters. People are buying these things and we can't even get them yet.

Just an editorial note - FWIW!

Had an opportunity to fire a friend's new S & W 500 the other day. It was the one with the 8-3/8" barrel. Fired two rounds! Don't know or understand why I fired two! I always wear hearing protection but the noise was incredible. I am not usually recoil sensitive but the recoil was also, incredible. Nice gun but not for me - ever! Good shooting;)
