anyone have some thoughts about this one? iv'e been thinking about getting one but i have'nt heard much about them..any info regarding the gun and a place to purchase at a resonable price is appreciated

The longbarelled version seemed to be overkill - the 454 Casull seems to be punishing enough to both shooter and target. Then to up the price of poker, S&W spit out the 4" version!!

What in God's name good is a 4" 500 Magnum??? Half the powder will be burned after the projectile is well downrange; it will put on an impressive fireworks display, but the recoil would have to be wrist breaking.

Why stop there - Smith and Wesson, we want a 2" snubby version!!!

Maybe we could convince Barrett to make their 10 round autoloader 50BMG rifle with an 6" barrel and a pistol grip for concealed carry...

Factory ammo is ridiculous, but I can reload a cast 460 grain bullet with a generous helping of H110 or Li'l Gun at a velocity of 1600 fps for about $2.40/box of 20. Fifteen grains of Unique with a 350 grain cast SWC makes a super accurate "plinking" load (5 shots into 4" @ 100 yds with open sights, consistently), and is still about the same muzzle velocity as a 240 grain .44 mag, but with the recoil of light .357 loads. A 325 grain jacketed bullet can be pushed to over 2000 fps from the 8 3/8" barrel, and a 270 grainer to 2200 fps. The 4" version is no less accurate, and with a slightly faster burning powder, such as AA #9 or Blue Dot, rest assured that you will get a full powder burn in the shorter tube. What good is it? Guides and others who regularly occupy the same territory as big browns, kodiaks, and grizzlys are buying them up right and left. It's compact, packs a BIG punch, and is easier to carry than a 12g or .45-70 guide gun type weapon.
The .500 X-frame isn't as punishing as most people believe, the weight and muzzle brake really tame it down. Now don't get me wrong, those 440-460 grainers @ 1600fps+ are punishing after awhile, but nothing like a .475 Linebaugh and less even than full-bore, heavy .454 loads out of an unported barrel.

What does it feel like to shoot? :D Anybody know what the ones like this are going for?

I had the pleasure of shooting a .500 8 3/8" at a recent TFL shoot. I wish I could have put more rounds through it but at $3 a shot (for the overpriced Corbon 400gr. he had with him) 5 shots was VERY GENEROUS indeed! The power was absolutely brutal...and intoxicating. ;) The recoil is big,no doubt about it but the weight and brake seem to take a great deal of the edge off it. It feels like a big THUD,not very sharp. I actually found it to be *more* comfortable to shoot than my .44mag. Ruger SBH with wood grips, despite the much bigger recoil. I want one bad. :) Marcus

Shot one also....

My 454 SRH has a sharper kick, but not as big a push. The big 500 is physically too big to pack around. If I wanted this kind of power, I'd look at a custom 500 Linebaugh Long in a more carryable bisley frame. My SRH is plenty for me and has taken its share of big game.

I have shot the .44 mag did not think it was that bad. I shot one of the 12 or 13 oz. .357 airweights?, and that was pretty brutal. 125 gr hot load. The grip was so small I could only one hand it. The web of my hand was swollen and 2 fingers were bleeding, but I got 40 rounds off. It was like a firecracker going off in my hand, and it moved a lot. I thought the weight and larger grips would definitely make the .500 a fun gun, but for practicality, it would best be used when small game hunting in big bear country probably. I think it was a gun mate scoped bandolier holster I saw that looked nice for that big hunk of iron. I looked at Gunbroker?, and think I saw it for $1300. That is a decent rifle and scope. I guess if I hit the lotto. Thanks for your descriptions, they were fun to read.

I got one of the PC500 Hunters with the 6 ½ “ barrel. It seemed to be the most practical length to me. It weighs in at 64 oz. I have a Weaver 2x scope for it in removable Warne mounts. After I glued the scope in the mounts with Locktite, it has stayed in place.
I have tried a number of different loads in it, and the recoil is remarkably mild for so much power, but for range work, I prefer to keep down the power. I am loading H4227 because it doesn’t seem to be as sensitive as 296 to underloading. I get all the power I need, and reasonable recoil.

thanks for all the replies..i thought the desert eagle 50 cal was a waste of money.but what the hell i bought one of those and i will eventually get one of these when i get the cash saved up..i keep spending all my cash on knives :) i love those daltons and sebenzas..never enough cash to fufill all my collections  i just missed a 500 mag with the 8 3/4 barrell for $625 shipped/probly cheap enough if the buyer ever gets the gun..thanks again for the replies guys
