S&W .500 Magnum

Lot's o' recoil with the heavy bullets/loads, but not all that different than heavy loads/bullets in a .44 mag. The weight and the muzzle brake do a very nice job of taming it down. It's far more pleasant to shoot than my Ben Forkin .475 Linebaugh Blackhawk conversion. I use a 450 grain GC bullet with 32 grains and up of Hodgdon's Li'l Gun (32 grains with the 450 is a "mild" load). My top loads with this bullet go across my PACT chrono @ ~1560 fps and I'm not yet at the recommended maximum. For the sake of safety and liability, I won't post my max loads to date. The "lightweight" 270 grain and 325 grain jacketed bullets can safely be pushed to well over 2000 fps. The 270 grainer can be maxed out at nearly 2200 fps. Fun gun.

I haven't shot one but I witnessed one being fired. The recoil didn't seem to be uncontrollable but the muzzle flash looks like someone touched off a howitzer.

Go for it! :) I hope to do the same, myself. The S&W 500 Magnum represents one end of the handgun spectrum, featuring a respected name with a reputation for good quality.

It will add genuine reinforcement to reloading activities. I find the Freedom Arms 83 in .454 Casull similarly appealing.

No doubt about it, these are special guns.
