S&W 460

First of all I wanted to say hi to forum. I have been lurking for the past month and learned a lot about revolvers.

I was going to buy a Ruger .41 mag. However after reading about ammo prices and seeing it at $30 a box, I have changed my mind.

I think for a good all around gun, the 460 would be a good one to get. The versatility to shoot 45LC out of it is what interest me.

Does anyone know when these guns will be available to the public and an estimation on price? Thanks for all ya'lls help.

I just bought a Ruger in 41 mag , I reload so I never looked at the price of factory ammo until now and it is high . The smith 460 will have a MSRP of around $1250 but after the few months I suspect the price will come down to were the smith 500 sells for at around $800-$850 . I shoot 45 colt and have seen bargin ammo is about $20 a box of 50 , the 454 ammo is alot more and the ammo for the 460 will probally be about $1+ a shot . If you are not going to reload you may consider a 44 mag , plenty of power and the ammo is priced a little less than 45 colt .

The 460 has a lot of interest to me due to its versatility. But, I absolutely would not want a 5lb handgun (or there abouts) as my main shooter. I have a 480 and sometimes wish that I would have gotten a 454 Casull for the same reason of versatility. But, I have plenty of guns to shoot without worrying about that much versatility unless I seek the power of the 460 mag for hunting purposes.

I didn't say this in the first post but the main purpose of the gun will be hunting. Mostly it will be on deer, however I do hunt hogs too. And I will always carry it as a backup when hunting deer. Hunting deer would be the primary purpose which is why I want the 460. A 250 yard range with a revolver is awesome.

They said March, then April, now it's a May release. I like it because of the multi caliber versatility too. I can shoot puny 454s for warm up :p

Don't let the MSRP faze you. Even in Kali, nobody pays MSRP.

I dont know that the Smith will be accurate enough for a shot on a game animal at 250 yards , I know very few handgunners that are good enough to take that shot even if the pistol is up to it .
That is going to be a big ol gun for to carry around for backup and will need a scope to get its full potential as a hunting gun . I dont really see it as a good dual purpose revolver

I dunno, Smith has a good track record AFA making accurate wheelies. They own revolver competition after all. It has to be scoped for 250 yards of course. But the scope is for the shooter to see as far as his 460 can shoot.

As for the duality. They're not breaking any new ground for this feature.

At 250-yd handgun? For antelope, maybe. But if you can't get within 100 yds of a deer you just ain't tryin'. That's an awful lot of handgun for a deer. If you want one, by all means get it, but I'd find another excuse. My wife would see right through that one ;)

An encore pistol is definentely on my list as far as deer hunting. I want something that will I can pack too and use on hogs that I might run across, or if I feel like hunting in the woods, use it open iron sights. I think the 44 mag is where I am leaning. Ruger SBH Bisley Hunter.
