S+W 460 vs. S+W 500

Hello. Let me preface my questions by acknowledging that I am somewhat of a newbie when it comes to revolvers, so bear with me... Am I right in assuming that the 500 is still more powerful than the 460 even though the 460 is faster? By that I mean, the 500 has more momentum, right? I've done a little research on this and that seems to be the way it is, but based on what I've been looking at, it doesn't seem like the 500 has much more ft/lbs of pressure than the 460? Am I totally off base here? Thanks in advance for your answers.

I believe that the .460 is a more powerful load than the .500 S&W. The caliber of the bullet is only part of the story, the .460 has a fairly long case length. The .454 has more oomph than the .480 Ruger for example.

Not a math wiz, but you have to fiqure the energy of getting that chunck o' lead out of that .500. Still waiting on the .460, I guess end of June was wrong too!

muzzle energy

Looking only at muzzle energy figures can skew your thinking of a rounds actual power. Remember E=mc^2. So, when you increase velocity (c) you _really_ change the energy since the velocity figure is squared in the equation. The .500 may indeed have more usable power because of the larger, heavier bullet, and therefore greater momentum.

This is all academic, as I suspect either will be a fine killing machine.

These are really two different animals of a revolver...the 500, more oriented as a dangerous game stopper or big game hunting revolver, where as the 460 was designed to be incredably flat shooting. The 500 still has the most potent loads...however, not by much. I still think the 500 will remain the better dangerous game stopper due to its monster bullets and caliber advantage. What the 460 lacks in bullet weight, it makes up for in very high velocity numbers.
