I bought my new S&W 460 Magnum yesterday and will take it to the range today. I will also take along my S&W 500 Magnum and compair the felt recoil between the two I will let you know how it goes, looking forward to the fun.

I am curious to know what the recoil is like with 454 Casulls fired through it. The load that I used to use in my SRH 454 was a 300 grain XTP-Mag sitting on top of 31 grains of Win 296. I'll bet that's super sweet in the 460...it definitely WASN'T in the SRH!

Well the results are in and the 500 mag has a good bit more recoil than the 460 mag. I first shot the 460 with Hornady 200gr SST round, I then swiched to the 45 Colt 250gr JHP, man it was like shooting 38 special very little recoil, I then shot the 454 Casull 260gr JFP the felt recoil was a good bit more than the 45 Colt as you would expect, however it was plesent to shoot comapaired to my Taurus 454 Casull. I sat up a bowling pin, the round went all the way through the fat part of the pin. I read if you zero the 460 at 200 yards it will hit in the kill zone at 250 yards with out a hold over, the trajectory is flat at 250 yds, quiet a gun. Well good shooting.

what primers did you use with that 31gr of 296 in your 454?

Hi, Yac...I used CCI Standard Small Rifle primers with that load. It was pretty stout in the SRH. It was manageable...but you definitely knew that you had a handful!!!! FWIW, I also used Starline 454 brass. That was a supremely accurate load, too. At least with my gun it was.

I think if I buy a 460...I'll stick with 454 Casulls in it. I have a hunch that the really hot 460s will be HARD on forcing cones A LA the 357 Maximums...

S&W Junkie, i use CCI400 primers and Starline Brass with my 454 Casull. The forcing cone face is highley polished on the 460 to eliminate what the engineers call "screamers" extreamley hot gas flashes, they say that will keep the hot gas from finding a tool mark and ruining the barrel. I also read where some one said that S&W reccomended that the gun be sent back to them after a couple thousand rounds so the could replace the barrell at a cost of $100 bucks, i dont know if that is a fact or not but i intend to call and ask.

I have the same componenets too except for my brass is Winchester. I am planning to buy several thousand of the Starline cases though. I got the 300gr XTP Mags figuring they would be a good deer load. Do you think this 31gr of 296 and the 300gr XTP Mag would work pretty well on deer?

I also have some Cast Performance 360gr cast bullets that I'm going to load up tomorrow....sound like they might be fun too :D I have no idea what I"ll use these for yet.

Hi, Yac...

I think that load ( 31 grains Win 296, 300 grain XTP-Mag ) would be VERY effective on deer, as well as just about any other big game in North America. According to my Hornady manual, 31 grains of 296 should push that bullet somewhere between 1550 and 1600 fps. Hornady used Federal 205 primers instead of CCIs, and their test gun was a Freedom Arms with 7.5" barrel. I have never chrono'd that load in my SRH, but being as how the SRH also has a 7.5" barrel...although I honestly don't know what the SRHs twist rate is...the FAs is 1 in 24...I would imagine that it's within at least 50-100 fps of that in the book. Off hand, I am not sure what that works out to in terms of energy, but that is WAY beyond anything a 44 Magnum can do. I would be very confident in that load for deer. I wouldn't feel undergunned using that load for elk, either.

I was looking at the Winchester manual and saw that with a charge of 31.5gr of 296, a Winchester small rifle primer and a 300gr jsp bullet they list a velocity of 1750 fps. I'm wondering, can I use that same data and substitue the 300gr jsp bullet with the Hornady 300gr XTP Mag bullet? Also, my SRH has the 9.5" barrel on it so maybe I"m getting a few more fps?

So when will they come out with a 460 Magnum with a 3.5" barrel and bobbed hammer? Should make an excellent concealed carry piece - don't you think? Wonder if it will penetrate car bodies and still maintain some hitting power.
