S&W 457, and what to followup with.

My wife and I purchased a S&W model 457 .45. It's our first handgun, although
many moons ago, my dad and I used to plink around with .22's.

I got it, because I have relatively small hands, and I could get a good grip on in vs something like the GLock's, which were too wide for me. Plus I like (having a small child at home), the safety features on the 457 vs the glock a bit better.

ANy thoughts on this gun? It works fine, we've put about 150 rounds through it, and the action is starting to loosen up a bit so it's getting easy for my wife to work the slide. It's also coming apart for cleaning much easier now.

My followup question is that we'd like to become much better shots, but .45 ammo isn't cheap. What would be a good choice for a second "practice" gun, to work with, while keeping the .45 for defense/the big stuff?

I have owned a 457 in the past and had no problems with it . I think a good .22 like a Ruger Mark II is hard to beat for practice . The ammo is very cheap , the recoil is small , and they are a great extra gun . You can usually find a new one for around $240 or so . Good luck , Mike...
