S&W 4506 extractor pin question.

It feels stoopid to ask this but I'm going to anyway.
I'm trying to knock the extractor pin out of my S&W 4506 so I can clean the crud out under the extractor and relpace the spring. Logic dictates that the pin should come out through the bottom of the slide so that the frame rail can prevent it from backing out during use. Right??? I''ve bent one punch arleady trying to tap it out. Tempting as it is to move to progressively bigger hammers I'd rather ask and see if there's something else to this seemingly simple task.
Thanks,

You need to buy or make a punch with a very short pin (less than 1/4") to use as a starter punch.

I did and that's the one I bent. The pin part of the punch can only be so short because of the way extractor pin is recessed in the top of slide.

How about 1/8" or even a short taper? You just need to get the pin started, then a regular punch can take it from there.

I got two more pin punches today. I'll shorten one as much as I can and try that. I'll come back to tell how it went.
Thanks,
