I am in the market to purchase a backup gun to carry around my ankle. I have narrowed it down to S+W, the 442 only comes in 38special while the 340pd comes in 357mag. The difference in price is 200.00, the 340pd being the more expensive. Is it worth the cost to get the 357mag? I carry a Dept. issued SigP226 40cal on duty this will only be used as a backup or off duty once in a while.

Always good to have more capability than you need

I really like having .357mag capability. My 340 is a near constant companion due to its weight to power ratio.

I bought a 442 yesterday and considered the PD. This is  my 3rd J frame and have never fired a .357 thru them after the first cylinder full I did about 10 years ago! Go 442 and well chosen .38's..

Both will serve you well

I think either gun will serve you well. The 340 pd have the .357 capavility and even if you use only .38spl +p in it you will get more durability from a .357 than from a .38spl only gun.

I own the 340pd and is a great gun all around. I started shooting .38spl +p, however I can now shoot .357 mag reduce load almost as fast and accurate as shooting .38spl out of it. Not fun on .357 but you can get more penetration from a .357 out of a 2" vs the .38spl from same gun. An inch or two may make the difference between stoping or not. Having said that I also think that a well place 38spl will beat a not so well placed .357. I hope that helps.
