S&W 3913--Which Carry Load?

Corbon 115-grain with Sierra Power Jacket bullet in warmer months; 127-grain in colder months for increased penetration through heavy clothing likely to be worn at that time. Practice with both bullet weights thoroughly.

Tested 3 loads

I am not sure what length barrel your S&W has, but I tested these out of a CZ75 with 4.7" barrel. They were shot into soaked newspaper bundles with a G.I. field jacket folded in half and placed in front of the wetpack.

Win. USA 115gr HP: .57 and .65 expansion, penetration was approx 12". Expansion average: .61

Win. 147gr Silvertip: .61, .65, .50, and .59 expansion, penetration was 14". Expansion average: .58

SpeerGD 124gr +p: .53, .52, .56, .63 expansion with the average being .56, penetration was approx 14", similar to the Silvertip load.

All in all I was impressed with all rounds fired, especially the Win 115 HP's which I pick up at Sports Authority for 8.99 a box of 50. If your barrel is shorter than 4" I would use something in the 115gr to 124gr loads. Another good load to check out is the Remington 115gr +p load, when I tested these all rounds expanded over .60 and penetrated approx 12". Most important, make sure it is reliable.

When I carried a 3913 the ammo I chose was Winchester 115gr STHP. It functioned reliably and was the same 9mm round used by local law enforcement.

Which 9mm load???

I load the same 9mm round in both of my Sigs (P226/P225).

I load Federal's 9BP round which is a standard pressure 115 gr. JHP.

Very accurate round and is easy on the hardware. All the +p and +p+ hype has not yet gotten my attention, and neither has the cost of such loadings.

Peace of mind being priceless, I certainly have no qualms with those who load such high pressure rounds.

I am sure any firearm is going to wear out faster if you feed it a steady diet of high pressure ammo. I have a 439 set up with a 16 pound recoil spring so I can use (+P) ammo. I practice mostly with standard pressure ammo and reserve the (+P) for carry and occasional practice.

In the factory stock pre-TSW 3913 I use Remington 115gr JHP +P (R9MM6) for carry, because of its good reputation for feeding and good bullet performance. But I don't know what effect it may have on the aluminum frame. For practice I use Fed American Eagle 115gr FMJ. Gun runs great on both.

Gold Dot 124 grain +P (Proload, Georgia Arms, Speer) if it feeds reliably in your gun.

Remington 115 grain +P JHP if the Gold Dot doesn't work well. These bullets have a very conservative profile, and feed reliably in many guns that normally don't like wide mouthed hollowpoint bullets.
