S&W 327TRR8 Question

I finally got one, and have a couple of questions. First, how hot of a load will it handle? The cylinder walls look to be pretty thin, so I don't want to blow it up.

Second, it has a gold bead front sight, and I would like to switch it out for a TFO or some such, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

I haven't experimented with how hot to go on the loads, but so long as you keep things within SAAMI spec for .357 Magnum you should be OK. I might recommend going with heavier bullets to prevent damage to the top strap; I have seen some guys with similar models (that have that little shield) saw that little piece right in half from flame cutting. I tend to load my .357 a little on the lighter side of the range with 158 grain loads and they shoot VERY well. I'd not use the "Ruger only" loads.


Regarding front sights, any that would fit there would work fine- just make sure you get the right height (not sure how tall the stock one is).
 
Thanks, Technosavant. I am familiar with Ruger-only loads, and was planning on avoiding them. Buffalo Bore and Double Tap, among others, make some pretty stout loads that still fall within spec, so I'll stick to those, since I don't reload.

I'll check around for some hi-viz front sights.

Ruger-only loads are frequently found for .45 Colt, sometimes for .44Mag, but are not used for .357Mag to my knowledge.

There is such a thing as a Rifle-only .357Mag load, but AFAIK most newer loading books don't contain them, and they've never been loaded commercially on a large scale. These loads generally utilized some of the faster rifle powders.

A TRR8 should be able to digest as much standard .357Mag ammo as you can feed it. :D

Yup, and I've read of people chopping that thing right in two. It protects the frame, but it isn't a foolproof solution. IMO, better to just avoid the problem entirely with heavier bullets, but that's just my own opinion. Anyone else is welcome to do what he or she likes with their own guns.

For one thing, I wish I had the gold bead front sight, although mine has a white dot front and a black V-grove rear, they work pretty good for me.

Unless you hand load to excessive pressures, I wouldn't sweat it. Most of what I shot out of mine are powerful .357s. You name it, I've shot it.

I also have a S&W 627 V-Comp two tone, now that thing really tames those hot loads with the heavy barrel and the compensator.

No flame cutting issues with either gun.

Both wear Hogue rubbers.
 
I have one handgun with a gold bead and really like it. That said, if the OP wants another front sight, then changing it is not fixing something broken. Some people like coffee and some like tea.
