Besides the material, and the weight, are there other difference in these guns? Do they shoot the same? Being a .22, does the weight make a difference in shooting? I'm thinking about getting a .22 and both of these are on my list. Thoughts?

The Model 64 is a K-frame .38 Special and the 317 is a J-frame.

Here is a good illustration of the S&W frame sizes sans the X and L frames. From the top: is an N-frame Model 57 .41 Magnum, K-frame Model 19 .357 Magnum and J-frame Model 51 .22 Magnum.

They all handle different, but I like them all. The 317 is a nice little revolver and so is Model 64, but no, they don't feel lie each other for training purposes.

Here is my S&W .22 Masterpiece on top and .38 Masterpiece on bottom. They are the exact same size and feel almost the same. Although without looking I'm sure the .22 weighs slightly more, because of the thicker cylinder walls.

I screwed up...... I meant model 63. The 63 and 317 kit gun are both listed as J-frame .22's with 3 inch barrels.

Nice guns.

I screwed up too, I should have figured you knew the difference. :o Yes, the Model 63 and 317 are very similar in handling characteristics. Both are very nice pistols. I have a a Model 34, which is of course the blue steel version of the 63. I love the size and weight.

I have both and like the model 63 a tad better. I do admit I found the 317 better to carry around and I do use it more often. The 63 is easier to shoot more accurately because of the sights. I don't care for the V notch rear site on the 317.
