Good Evening Folks !

I'm a Newbie to the Firing Line forum and wanted to ask for advice on opinions about the S&W 317-- 8 shot revolver with the 3 in, bbl and rear adjustable sights. I saw a used one for approx 300 bucks and before I purchased it , wanted to ask y'all for opiniond about it. My intentions are to use if for mainly range plinking. Is there much difference between a new and used? (Besides the new costing approx. 500 bucks)

Another question- does this have any merit as a self defense weapon to keep at your bedside?

Thanks Very Much !!!!!!

Newbie

The finish was a bit fragile on the one I owned, and the rear sight was cheapened over that of the older models.

Mine shot fine, good accuracy, though not as good as my 34 or 63...

Bedside? Its better than throwing the TV remote!

The only thing that's good about any .22 is that it's cheap to shoot. I have one,and it's a fun little gun, there's nothing wrong with it at all. It is an autoloader though, much easier to load than a revolver, no fiddling around pushing rounds into the cylinder. In brief my advice is to forget about the .22 revolver - if you want a .22, start with an auto - Brownings are good.

The 317's claim to fame is it's weight and size. If you ever intend to take it allong hiking, camping ,fishing etc, it's a perfect match. Problem is that the small size and short barrel will likely limit accuracy to beer cans @30-50'. If you will use it primarily at the range, then a used mod 17,18 revolver ( or 4" 34/63) would be a better match.

P.s. IF the 317 is in VG or better condition, It's priced $50-100 LOW from what I've seen. You could always buy it, try it and then resell if I wasn't your cup of tea.

FWIW, I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I saw it. (Of course, I'm addicted to rimfire revolvers.) :D
