S&W 25-5 Questions

Okay, as I said in another post, I found a Smith & Wesson 25-5 yesterday at a local shop for $299. It's got a blue finish, 5" or 6" barrel (think it's 5"), and is chambered for the .45 Colt round. The blueing is a little worn here and there, but the lockup is tight. There is no discernable play in the cylinder; the double action trigger is like butter and the single action trigger is crisp and light. It has easy to see white box rear/orange ramp front sights.

In other words, it was love at first sight.

I've been told to stay away from the Thermonuclear loads available for .45 Colt, but according to an article I read by Mr. Linebaugh, a 250-260grn bullet at 800-900 feet per second (the load I was looking for) would be fine. Also, Winchester Silvertips and Cor-Bon Self-Defense .45 Colt would be fine as well, AFAIK.

I know this gun was discontinued in 1991 or so. How hard are they to find? Do I have a real prize here?

I know it's not much for collector value if it only costs $299, but that's fine, 'cause I intend to shoot this baby, not put it under glass and look at it (though it's pretty enough to do that, too).

HKS Makes speedloaders for it. This is even better. Can anyone recommend a holster for it? Not necessarily a concealed carry one; I'm thinking a good, LEFT HANDED shoulder holster or hip holster for field carry.

And, if I do want to get it refinished, can anyone recommend anywhere? I'd want a nice, professionally done rebluing job.

Who has good deals on bulk .45 Colt ammo? Preferably some stuff with a LITTLE bit of punch to it. (As opposed to straight CAS loads that are like 200grn @ 700fps.) I don't want my practice ammo to be too low powered; that won't help me get accustomed to recoil and fast follow up shots with more powerful ammo, you know.

Also, is there anything else I should know about this piece? I emailed S&W once, they say they provide service and parts for discontinued models, so I should be fine there if any springs or small parts need replacing down the road. Though, from what I understand, revolvers tend to last for a long long time.

At $300 I'd consider it to be a freaking TREASURE here in Northern Virginia.

Middle to crappy condition 25s go for in the mid 400s to well into the 500s around here.

250-260grns at 900fps is about typical for 45LC, little warmer than normal but typical. The 45LC and 45ACP aren't all that different if you look soley at velocity range, the difference really is the 45LC using a 250-260grn slug while the 45ACP uses a 230grn slug for similar velocities.

Reloading manual is out in the garage so I can't say for certain what the upper end recommended loads are for the S&W 25-3s and 25-5s but I seem to recall that 250s at 900fps is within accepted loads.

I've got a 25-3 which has a shorter cylinder length to it, the 25-5 supposedly has the longer cylinder of the model 29s.

If a gun like you describe popped up here locally, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat.

Alessi Fieldmaster

Take a look at the Fieldmaster. It works for my Super Redhawk, but haven't yet purchased one for my S&W 25. BTW.. at that price you did a great job..

Careful I almost bought a nice condition 1955 target .45acp last week until I noticed frame wasnt polished like barrell and trigger was narrow ect. Upon close inspection it had Mod 28 frame and trigger with 1955 barrel, cylinder and hammer and was an obvious attempt at forgery with mod inside frame struck over with a "5" over 8!:barf:

The blueing is a little worn here and there
If the total of worn blueing is small....price is ok.

I would not consider refinishing. A reblue would likely knock the value down under $200.

Sounds like a good shootin gun, for you and your heirs.

Sam

Nice price, nice piece, here in Idaho I paid $500 for my last 25-5, find it a real pleasure to shoot running 250 grain hard cast at about 875fps.

Oh, cool. I'm really pumped about this now. I can't wait until Friday when I can pick it up. Event hough I didn't make a down payment, the dealer knows me and was kind enough to put it behind the counter. I don't get paid until MOnday, and told him I'd be up to buy it this weekend.

Plus, this'll give me the perfect excuse to get a Taurus 450 5-shot .45 Colt snubby, and a .45 Colt lever carbine. Hehe.
