S&W 25-3 LC: Best Lead or Jacketed

Other than .22, I've not ventured into shooting lead bullets. Just paid for Mod 25 in Long Colt and ventured past the reloading supply vendors. Do those of you that shoot modern DA/SA revolvers prefer lead, or jacketed and what bullets provide best accuracy? Not looking for protection, just fun and games.

I have 2 25-5 revolvers, been shooting Lazer cast 250 grain FPRN on top of 10 grains of accurate #5, been easy to shoot and quite accurate, minimal leading after a lot of shooting.

Some of my favorite loads for use in my four-inch S&W Mountain Gun - - -

Anybody's 250 to 255 gr. LSWC or LRNFP (Cowboy style) and 8.0 gr. of 231 yields about 820 fps. This is said to about duplicate the old black powder civillian load with which the .45 Colt made its name.

Same bullet with 9.0 H. Universal OR 9.2 of Unique goes around 915. A really good hunting load.

Using a 230 LRN .45 ACP bullet and the 8.0 gr. of 231 is a good plinking load. I've shot a lot of these in IDPA and plate matches. A little more powerful than the old .45 S&W "Scofield" load.

These are not barn burner loads--but plenty good for every day uses.

Gary,

A load that has proven to be vary accurate in all my model 25's, 625's, and even Ruger single actions is:

200 grain SWC cast of plated bullet
7.2 grains Bullseye
Federal 150 primer

Good luck...

Joe
