S&W 1917

$350 isn't a terrible price for a nice shooter which is what the revolver in question is. While nicely done, nickel is not the original finish for this revolver and the stocks aren't original either so any collector value is pretty much gone. However, if the gun is in good shape mechanically it should serve just as well for its intended purpose today as it did in 1917.

Thanks for the encouragement. I really don't know much about older Smiths. The seller says he's put a few boxes through it and it shoots sweet. said it was used in a pawn shop for personal protection for several decades. Can't do much about the plating. Just clean the gun and shoot mid-low grade 45's with it. I just like to buy historical guns that at their worst keep their value. I'll probably pick it up tomorrow.

+1 what Bossman said. Even if there were minor mechanical issues within my ability to correct- I'd jump on it.

You got a great price at $350.00 on that 1917 revolver. A S&W "classics" nickel plated 1917 repro would cost you in excess of $800.00 and even then its front sight isn't the same and it would have that awful looking lock hole in the side of the frame. You did excellent. Let me know if you want your $350.00 back out of it :D.

I spent 2 hrs cleaning the old boy today. I put some old Pachs I had on it since it is a shooter anyway. Locks up tighter and slicker than my 1980's 629. I did find it considerably leaded up. Does anyone recommend a product that can remove lead from bore/cylinders without hurting nickle finish?

I went ahead and took your advice. What do you think of my 1917 $350 purchase?

Well I would have bought it too. The gun is a N frame S&W aka large. It is also a 5 screw gun, 4 side plate screws and one in front of the trigger guard. The reason that the wood grips don't look right is that they are from a K frame aka medium. They are worth $20 themselves so you could sell them and put that towards a nice set. Original grips for the gun aren't worth it since the gun was nickel plated. It should serve you well as a shooter but I think for carry its too big. Some people still do carry S&W N frames in shoulder holsters, its matter of opinion I guess. Nice purchase.
