Just looked at what is supposed to be a S/W 1917 in .45acp.The problem is there is no sn. any where on the frame ,even under the grip pannels. There is a number under the barrel no US marks any where .Gun is in Syr.N.Y. I would like to get it but the lack of a no. any where on the frame bothers me.

The serial number is supposed to be on the bottom of the grip. It is often partially covered by the lanyward.

If there's no serial number there, it would worry me, too.

I can't speak for the S&W model of 1917, but I had a Colt 1917 .45 ACP
(moon clip) revolver that shot pretty darn good to be an old beat 'em
up kind'a gun. Follow my friend Mike Irwin's advice, as he knows
firearms real well.

Best Wishes,

Could be a commercial model like this 1937 vintage model 1917.

They had the serial number in less places. IIRC... mine is on the bottom grip frame (like all S&W revolvers) and on the flat on the bottom of the barrel.

Good Luck...
