My wife and I just purchased a S&W 18-4 unfired in the box. I think we might have paid a little more than its worth but she liked it...so now we own it. Can anyone help me with its manufacture date. The SN is 31K9746. This one will not remain unfired for long. We plan to take it to the range this weekend.

Wow Mike, I just bought one of those. Mine wasn't marked as per model but the good folks here informed me it was a M-18 and probally made in 1952.
I plan on shooting mine this weekend if the weather gets above 10 degrees. :)
Hope you and your wife enjoy yours.

Congrats! The mod 18 is one of the niciest of any of the K-22 series revolvers. It has a sweet ballance to it and great accuracy. It's also from an era when S&W made some great blue revolvers. Not sure what "paying to much" is these days as 18's are in big demand. It's hard to find anything nice for under $350 and near impossable to find one as new. Shoot it but keep it out of a holster and minty and you'll never loose $ on that gun.

Thanks for the info. We paid $500 for it. My wife said she wanted a 22 revolver so we wandered around to the different pawn shops. We went to this one old shop with pretty much nothing but junk in the displays. The owner pulled this one "from the back". When we saw it, we had to have it and he knew it. Kim (my wife) loved it. She is just getting into the sport. Its probably a shame to shoot it, but I don't own anything that I don't shoot. And the model 18 is just beggin for it.

I bought a M18-3 new in 1977. I traded it to my brother back in the early 80's. He wrapped it in a felt bag and never fired it. It's still like new. I managed to buy it back from him in January of 2004. It cost me $177.00 the first time. This time it cost me $300.00. Single action is light and crisp and the D/A pull is smooth and light. Accuracy is top notch. It's my favorite .22. I'll never let it get away again.

They're going for around $400.00 aroung here. Even if you did pay alittle to much you won't regret it once you fire it. The prices on older S&W are only going to continue to increase. In a couple of years you'll be bragging about the great bargin you got when you bought it. Enjoy!

Congrats on the Mod. 18.

The only thing you will find is that the chambers are pretty tight. When you go to shoot it it would be wise to bring along a brush or bore snake so you can clean out the cylinder every now and again.

No big deal, it's just the nature of the beast.

Enjoy,
Bob

Well we took the new baby out to the range today. You are right Rbert the chambers are tight when loading practically drops free unloading. If you wouldn't have posted that info I would have asked if something was wrong with it.

We put about 400 rounds through it and it is SHWEEEET. My wife loved shooting it as did I.

I think we only put 50 rounds through the BHP and spent the rest of the time playing with the Smith.

Now I want a model 19 to go with it!

The S&W 18 is a dandy gun. Used to be pretty popular as a practice gun with cops who carried a K frame revolver as a duty gun. I bought mine to complement the S&W 15 I carried as a duty gun for a while way back when.

I knew a couple of guys who picked up model 18s as practice guns when they were Security Police in the Air Force, because the AF issued the M15 as the standard sidearm from sometime in the middle 1950s until the M9 was introduced, and on an airman's pay shooting .22s for practice was a lot more affordable.

Paid too much?

No way! You made your shoot'n buddy/bride happy.
I'd never pass up a deal like that!
You could have spent a whole lot more and
made just as good a deal!!
Congrats on a great gun. Congrats on a great shooting partner!
I wish I had a S&W .22 or two...it's on my "want to buy" list!!

Have fun.

Bob
