S&W Model 17 241xxx. date of manufacture?

As Mr. Spock used to say " The serial number given does not compute" unless of course there is a K in front of it, Serial number K 241XXX was made in 1955. The Model 17 was introduced in 1946 with the serial number K101

The Model 17 was introduced in 1946 with the serial number K101

1946 is actually the year that production re-started on them since S&W ceased production for the war effort. It wasn't known as the model 17 until 1957 (the first year of the numbered models) before that it was called the K-22 target masterpiece (post war) and pre war it was known as the K-22 outdoorsman. The basic design (the outdoorsman) actually came out in 1931.

K241xxx dates it to 1955. This makes it a K22 Masterpiece, which was renamed the Model 17 in 1957. There shouldn't be a model no. stamped under the yoke.
