S&W 17

As Mr. Spock used to say " The serial number given does not compute" unless of course there is a K in front of it, Serial number K 241XXX was made in 1955. The Model 17 was introduced in 1946 with the serial number K101:)

1946 is actually the year that production re-started on them since S&W ceased production for the war effort. It wasn't known as the model 17 until 1957 (the first year of the numbered models) before that it was called the K-22 target masterpiece (post war) and pre war it was known as the K-22 outdoorsman. The basic design (the outdoorsman) actually came out in 1931.

K241xxx dates it to 1955. This makes it a K22 Masterpiece, which was renamed the Model 17 in 1957. There shouldn't be a model no. stamped under the yoke.
