S&w 1076

They have a used S&W 1076 in a local shop for $540, I think, in excellent condition. Seems to fit my hand, (unlike the Glock 20) and costs less than $600 Unlike the Glock 20).

How is this pistol? I know S&W discontinued it, but if I buy it, will they still support it with parts/service? I don't want a pistol that I can't find replacement parts for.

If I wanted to get a 10mm, this would be the easiest choice. Other than that, I'd have to order a Glock 20 and probably need to get the ARS grip reduction, which would cost extra.

It seems that most of the 1076 owners enjoy them alot. That said, so do I. Accurate for our purposes, easy to shoot and just plain fun.
Parts are still available, and if the company doesn't honor service (they should!) finding a smithy should not be hard.
I have seen parts on the Smith website and in Numrich, I believe.
The price does sound kinda high. Does it have night sights or extra mags?

$540 seems a bit steep, but the 10xx series pistols are good guns....built like tanks, very reliable, and blessed with thin frames due to the single-stack magazine. I'm carrying a 1066 in a Mitch Rosen ARG right now, it's one of my favorite carry guns. Got it used as a LEO trade-in, replaced the recoil spring with a Wolff 20-pound spring, and replaced the worn mag springs. It has been 100% reliable so far, feeding everything from lead target loads to 200gr. loads and everything in between, including 155gr. Shear Power Plus loads putting out 650fpe.

I'd say go for it...the 10xx series pistols are getting hard to find, as they were only made for a period of two or three years. They're probably the best non-Performance Center semis out of Springfield, along with the 39xx series.

I've been set on a .45 as my automatic to buy this summer, but there's something about the 10mm that I keep coming back to.

That 1076 has been there for awhile, and the price has been reduced once. Perhaps it will be again?

DOES S&W do work on them (even if I have to pay for it), still? Regardless of whether it's warranty work, I'd feel much better knowing I could get parts replaced if need be.

Yes Smith still services them. 540 does seem high for used. I bought a NIB about two months ago for that same price. This was my the second 1076 for my collection because I liked the first so much. I finally located a 1026 so I carry it now but if I had not I would still carry the 1076. If you do decide to buy it, check the frame near the decocker. If it does not have two small punch marks you may have to send it to Smight for the decocker upgrade. Write the serial number down and call Smith to check it.

Hmm. I'll have to give it a second look, then. I turn 21 on Sunday, and have some money put away. I'm more than likely going to go ahead and get the Ruger GP100 4" stainless first, then get an autochucker sometime later this summer, depending on how my money goes.

I've given the Glock 20 some consideration. The 10 round magazines are cheap, so I could stock up, plus buy a couple 15 rounders. Hmm. I could shoot .450SMC out of a .45 for extra power, but it costs a helluva lot more than 10mm factory ammo.

$540 is somewhat high.

If it's been there a while, chances are they'd like to "move the merchandise."

Make them a offer at, say, $450 or $475, and see what they do. If they don't immediately laugh in your face or show you the door, maybe they'll dicker and drop more from this elevated "retail" price. :)

I'd say $540 is a bit high, but it would depend if there is a market for the 10mm in your neck of the woods. Here the dealers can't give them away, and the pawn shops won't even look at them. I was looking a 1076 a couple of months ago in pristine condition with four factory mags that had set in the dealer's cabinet for over a year. I just looked at it, and he offered it to me for $500 "out the door" (about $460 for the pistol). If I'd been interested (or I tried), I could have probably got it out the door for $450 easy. But on the other hand, they seem to demand a good price and disappear from the boards quickly when offered on the "For Sale" forum. (The exception being the current 1026--same as the 1076 with a five-inch--which has struck around for a while . . . been then the asking price is $600.)

I paid $500 for my 1006 in like-new, flawless condition with 5 mags. I think it was a fair deal. I will say one thing-it is one my very favorite guns and I will never part with it. I like it so much that, even though it is quite large and heavy, I do CCW with it in the cold season. Great guns. :)
