S&w 1066

Found a used 1066 in very good condition and considering to buy it. Any opinions out there on this pistol? Seems like a pretty good deal: 1066, leather holster, and three mags for $375. Was a local Police Officers personal gun. Bought it after hearing "the force" was going to 10mm, then they decided on 40S&W instead. It's been on consignment for awhile, so I can probably get it for $350.

That's about what I paid for my 1066, although mine had some holster wear from LEO holster use. The price is right, especially if it's in good shape.

General consensus seems to be that the 10xx-series Smiths are among the best pistols ever cranked out by *&*. Reliable, solid, well-constructed, flat, and easy to shoot...although they are a tad on the heavy side if you're used to toting a polymer autochucker. The 1066 weighs in at 39 ounces, not a lightweight...but it's very easy to carry in the right holster thanks to its slimness, especially in the grip area.

10mm is a great caliber, powerful and versatile, and the 10xx-series Smiths are very good platforms for it. I'd get it in a heartbeat for that price...they only made the 1066 for two years, between 1990 and 1992, and they sure won't be getting any more common in the future.

Agree with Lendringser's comments ...

... but the key to offsetting the 1066's weight, as with any other heavy all-steel pistol, is a top quality gun belt & holster combination. Do yourself a favor here and spend a little extra to get one.

Otherwise, in some el-cheapo $25 holster that Smith's going to feel like a boat anchor if worn more than a few hours. (My 1076 is the same size as the 1066).

Sounds like a pretty good deal. I bought the exact same rig (possibly from an officer on the same department). I got mine a little cheaper, but that's because nobody needed to make a profit on it. I bought it because it was a good deal and I figured I'd trade it away, but one magazine through it and I knew I was keeping it. If you can get it down to $350, I'd say take it, you'll like the pistol.

Excellent, go for it....

Jakester,

I just finnaly received my 1066, that upon inspection appears to have fired VERY few rounds through the piece. Only some very minor holster "rub" marks on the slide and one one the frame. Were it not for the marks my 1066 would rate an Excellent condition rating. Your price beats mine buy a cool $75 though. But that's not a complaint, as it has been all but impossible to locate a 1066 in my neck of the woods.

As stated, go for it!

Agtman,

I may just have to pickuup one of the 1076's that I keep seeing at the gun shows in my area. A few have been very nice. We'll see.

On the holster issue, what are your recommendations for an IWB for the 1066/1076 size 10's? I prefer one that carries as low on the belt as possible, as I don't like the grip riding up into my lower ribcage. I've been considering the Bianchi #100 Professional or the #6 ATD, though the latter is a little "flexible" for the weight of the 10XX series Smith's.
