s&w 10-5

Is there any reason not to get a mint condition 5" model for $450? I do mean mint, but failed to ask if there was a box. Would make a great wedding gift for my fiancée.

Did they make the 19-5 in a 5" barrel?

Keep the forcing cone very clean. The 19-5 is the model that has the biggest problem with cracked forcing cones and one theory that makes sense to me is carbon deposits in that area create hot spots that damage the metal.

Most indications are that 1) forcing cone damage was pretty uncommon and 2) it happened mostly with certain 125 grain jacketed hollow point bullets in full house .357 loads.

Other combinations gave no trouble, and the guns were on the market for years before those loads came on the market and problems began to show up.

Bad, who thinks this would be a great wedding gift, you or the lady in question? If it's not something she really wants, you may have a very interesting wedding night:eek:

Even if it's a 10-5, $450.00 is not an outrageous price for it. It's not a steal, but it's about what a nice one will go for around here. The box would add more.

My wife and I have given guns to each other for Valentines day.

More will be revealed on Tues. The shop is closed until then. I will need to consign a Range Officer that I don't shoot to get it so I am wondering out loud if that makes sense. No, it would not be an equal trade. :)

Oh, for crying out loud. The OP said a 10-5 and I read it as a 19-5. My eyes are just as old as the rest of me. Sorry. No known problems with a 10-5. Shoot away until your trigger finger wears out.

Wait, OP did say 19-5 at first. OK, same thing. Shoot a 10-5 all you want.

That price is probably pretty good for the condition but I don't buy collector guns, I buy shooters. If you want a LNIB gun then buy it. I would look for a $300 shooter grade, myself.

OP Here: Yes it was my mistake. I accidentally put up 19-5, realized it, then corrected to 10-5. Or maybe, just maybe, I did it to trip you guys into pre senility!

In my neighborhood that's about $50-$75 on the high side.

But consider, if it's something you want for a special occasion it's not a question to buy or not, just buy it and be happy.

In the scheme of things, by the time you get it home and are fondling it, the cost will be but a mere memory :)

.

Does it have the diamond grips? NIB diamond k frame grips are worth a decent amount in themselves.
Either way, I would consider that a pretty fair deal, not a steal but worth the money.

I passed on a minty 10-5 with a 4" barrel about (just the revolver, no box, etc.) a year ago that I could have had for $350.oo out the door . . . and yes . . . I kick myself everyday. Some may think the $450.00 is a little high but it all depends on where you are. I look at it this way . . . if you like it and the price is O.K. with you . . then get it and just enjoy it. Let's face it, you're going to have to pay a lot more for a new Classic Model 10.

As far as the 5" barrel . . . I have a 1952 M & P which is the predecessor to the Model 10. I have a number of Smiths but it is my favorite - the 5" has a good balance and shoots very well.

Get it . . . enjoy it . . . then pass it on to your kids someday. :)
