S&B .45 Auto

I give this stuff a thumbs up in my G30! It shot great and other than turning the muzzle end of my weapon a gray color from power residue it shot relatively clean. No undue cleaning woes and for $9.00 a box I couldn't complain!

My question is this. What in the world is that red stuff that they put on the primer and case mouth? It seems to be a lot thinner than the Russian type laquer sealent that is common on Russian ammo. I would guess it's some type of sealant but it doesn't seem to gum up like Wolf ammo.

I've shot thousands of rounds of S&B without problem -- 9mm and .45 acp. Its my favorite ammo, but I sometimes shoot CCI Blazer when its cheaper.

The red stuff is a sealant. Its messy.

(One of the shooters here claims that the S&B for .40 S&W isn't as reliable or as accurate as the other calibers. I've had no experience with S&B in .40 S&W...)

IMO, S&B is the best, by a pretty wide margin, of the "cheap" ammo. It's all I used while in Virginia shooting IDPA (couple thousand rounds through my G19 and G21).

1) The "red stuff" is wax. It is intended to seal the primer against moisture.

2) The cases are made of brass. Wolf has the steel case!!!

I have used this brand in both my .45's and all my 9mms. It is top notch!!!:)

Good ammo; tight primer pockets

I concur that the stuff is very reliable and plenty accurate. Much better than CCI Blazer in my view.

The only thing to note for reloaders is that the primer pockets are quite tight. This can be an issue with some progressive machines. It takes much more effect to deprime and maybe 30% more force to seat a new primer. However, once you've reloaded the cartridge once it won't be as difficult to reprime in the future. I recommend depriming S&B 45 for the first time on a single stage, and using a standalone priming tool. Doesn't take much time and you can do it while watching TV... something I don't recommend with a progressive!

The brass is good and strong... holds up longer than American Eagle, and doesn't buckle like PMC. PMC is the only brass I leave on the ground at the range.

S&B .45 ammo is good stuff,(as is their 9mm).

I just bought a bunch from Miwall (they are all out now, they said that since 9-11 everybody has been buying alot of ammo, but they have more on the way).

I got it for $7.95 per box, .230gr .45 acp..

It shoots just as accurate as ammo twice the price and I have never had a malfunction with it..

I also like the small compact packaging as it fits really nice in my range bag.

Two thumbs up for S&B.

It is pretty good stuff. One of the few factory loads that Wilson recommends in their 1911s for ultra reliable feeding, something about the shape of the bullet. They even give you a box of it with the purchase of a new pistol. It is however the only factory ammo I have experienced squibs with, two in fact. Concur with Yo, you can always tell when a S&B case hits the primer stage of the reload.

As a note to those who are interested, S&B has made steel-cased ammo in the past. I bought a case of .223 S&B on one occasion that proved to be steel cased. It worked fine, but be sure that brass case is specified when you buy S&B ammo.
