this is texheard, Need help with id of very old sw 5 inch revolver. S/N is159848 last patent date is 9/14/1908 CTG SW 38 Special

S&W reused the same serial numbers over the years on different models of guns. Need to figure out what model you have first.
Is it a modern swing out cylinder or an older tilt barrel type. What caliber is is chambered for (should be stamped on the side of the barrel).
How many rounds does it hold.

last patent date is 9/14/1908. swing out cylinder. Shipped to New Iberia LA in early 1900s. CTG SW 38 Special 6 rounds
 
That would make it a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 - 3rd Change.
Serial numbers ran from 146900 in 1909 to 241703 in 1915.
