i just took my dad's old shotgun out of the closet to give back to him and on the receiver where the finish is worn it's just starting to rust. it's a 1969 year model wingmaster.

should i just get it refinished or is there another fix? comments/suggestions welcome.

If the look of the finish is important to you and/or your dad, I think refinishing it is the only answer.

If it's just goning to be used for everyday shooting and hunting, I'd just remove all of the rust with Flitz make sure the areas that are worn is always coated with some type of protectant when the gun is used and stored.

Agree - Flitz or GunBrite (found at Wal-Mart here) works the best for taking rust off.

I've never minded the wear, gives the gun distinction, IMHO.

The finish on a couple of mine is well worn, I just live with it.

Lots of closet guns show some oxidation after a few decades. PM is the best answer, regular coats of CLP, SLIP 2000,oil, etc, cost little in time and trouble.

Sometimes very light rust can be removed with LIGHT rubbing with 4/0 Steel wool soaked in oil.

With care, that 1969 WM will feed and protect your grandchildren....

I would be real careful with Flitz because if you get over agressive you can take the blue off too!

Try some OO steel wool with some light gun oil or CLP first. I had a Browning that cleaned up real nice this way.

Obviously if its pitted or showing bare metal you have another issue. Re blueing is not that expensive but it is somthing I would have a professional do before I would mess with it. I tried some cold blueing on a little pistol and would never mess with it again.

thanks guys. just got back from my dads, i told him about it first thing when i got there and he wasn't upset. i'll pass this info along. i would refinish it but pops probably will just use some fine wool and keep it lubed.

it's gonna be out all the time now since i bought him a riot bbl and ext for christmas.:D he lives in the sticks and has been wanting a riot shotgun for "pests", 4 legged and 2.;)
