Rust removal from the grip of my M29

Hi,

So my M29 is in cherry condition except for rust which is in the tiny grooves on the back of the grip. I've tried damn near everything to get it out - mostly crap loads of scrubbing with many solvents and a toothbrush. I think the problem may be that the grooves are too narrow for the bristles to get in. Either way, it's driving me nuts! Anyone have any idea how to clean this up?

the areas that are rusted no longer have a finish. the idea is to remov the rust and leave the finish that is left. on a smooth surface i would recommend the "penny trick." gently rubb the edge of an old solid copper penny over the rusted areas to remove the rust. the copper is softer than the finished steel and if you are careful it will only take down the rust.

you might try grinding down the edge of an old copper penny to a sharp edge and working it up and down the grooves.

Phosphor-bronze brush

These are the brushes most often seen in gunstores. Very soft metal. Use with some CLP or whatever.

Maybe some cold blue would make it look nice when you're done.

Regards.

Ledbetter n I close.

Keep it wet with Break Free for day or two. Then soft bronze brush. flush and do again if necessary.

Use a new nylon toothbrush

and some Flitz. Or, you can "kick it up a notch" by substituing a bronze brush if you need to get more aggressive.:)

Riddleofsteel is right. Wherever there is rust, there is no finish. I had a Remington 870. After 14 years, I took off the forend to clean the bolt. I found several rust spots on the magazine tube. Steel Wool took them off, but there was no bluing where the rust was. I just kept a light coat of grease on the mag tube after that & no more problems. The metal under the grips is more vulnerable to rust since you are always touching it. Occasionally wiping with oil will prevent it. Also helps to install grips that fully enclose grip framel
