Rust on parkerized finish

I just noticed that there's some tiny rust spots on my parkerized 1911. Is there any way to remove this with out damaging any more of the finish?

What type of 1911? An actual vintage pre-1946 US Property stamped M1911A1/M1911 refinished for WWII, or a modern commercial copy?

Rust remover

I've never needed to try this but in the past several posters have suggested using the edge of a copper penny as a rust remover. I don't remember if they suggested a small amount of oil on the spot first.

Good luck with whatever you try. :D

Make sure you oil the rest of the gun very well.

You want the parkerizing to absorb the oil so it won't rust any more.

The finish may not be damaged. I get rust on parkerized surfaces all the time, and it cleans up w/o damaging the finish. A simple method is to moisten a rag w/ Kroil, let is absorb, and then wipe it down. If it's stubborn, brass or bronze wool will work.

Scrub it with an oily rag. Keep it slightly oiled. Parkerizing pretty much just holds the oil on the metal, it doesn't actually prevent rust as you have seen.

Go to work on it with a rag and a good penetrating oil (Kroil is best). Scrub the heck out of it with the well oiled rag and maybe a toothbrush. On my Park'ed guns, after I clean them I spray them down with a heavy coat of oil (Rem. Oil usually) and let it sit overnight. This gives the finish time to soak up plenty of oil which is the purpose of parkerizing.
