I was out mowing the lawn in a light rain carrying my M66 .357 Mag. When I went inside, I wiped the water off the gun, or so I thought. Now there is small amounts of rust on the cylinder and in the one side. What can I do besides cry?:( Please help.

The rust us just surface rust, nothing deep. It is also a bunch of small specks.

Try oil and brass wool (Brillo pad) or 0000 steel wool. Either should take off the rust. How did that gun pick up rust that quickly? It is stainless, which we all know is really "rust resistant", but you really must have some kind of acid rain.

(I did sort of wonder about the need to carry a gun while cutting grass but then I recalled some balky lawn mowers and think that a .357 through the cylinder would have given me great pleasure.)

Thanks. I was mowing in the woods behind my house(26 acres total, mowed the trails) and we live near a turnpike truck stop, I felt better with it on. I live in PA and you know what the environmentalists say about coal burning and acid rain in PA.

Two things:

1) Make no mistake...STAINLESS STEEL WILL RUST! It is more rust resistant than others, but it will rust, especially under the grips. Remove grips often, clean and lube often, or you will have a very stained stainless steel gun.

2) Never criticize anyone for carrying a gun anywhere. To do so is being part of the problem, rather than part of the solution. My worst fear would be to be in a situation where I needed a gun and didn't have it, and I or a friend or loved one was seriously injured or killed as a result of it.

SS does rust in some cases. I would use auto chrome polish because it is specifically designed to take off light amounts of rust with almost no abrasion.

ditto above

I used turtle wax rust remover on a badly pitted chrome air breather cover for my truck and was truly surprised with the results. I just used an old t-shirt/rag and it didn't appear to have an averse effect on the finish.
