Rust in barrel Brush size?

O.K.

Since the appropriate boards are down, I'll ask here since I need an answer today.

Took apart my MN 91/30 after its 1st trial run. I'm going to refinish it and try and make it look factory new. I noticed that there are some rust specks in the barrel. Probably not from my ineffective cleaning as it was only a few hours after shooting. However, I'd like to nip this one in the bud.

What is the best way to scrub out rust in the barrel. It is completely stripped (no wood and I'm not worried too much about the bluing) so otherwise impossible methods are ok now.

Also, what would be an acceptable substitue brass brush size (I'm anticipating the answer)?

By the way, I totally jammed the brass brush marked for 8mm and bent it all up when trying to clean my 8mm mausers. Can they be any more wrong?

I don't know what size to avise you but for rust get the SS brush.
DO NOT STOP HALF WAY that will cause damage.....full sweeps each direction and that will get the rust and what ever else out.

Good Luck

Where can I get a decent array of SS brushes in SLC?
I tried Big 5, but like I said, their boxes are incorrectly marked.

Guess I'll just have to eye it up. Maybe just get something like .223 and hope it works.

Actually, accuracy is nice.

First time out with it yesterday. My friend had his sporty .243 with scope and I was testing out my new mauser. We couldn't hit his gong at about 400 yards for beans.

So, he brought it into 210 yards. After a few shots he started making a couple BONGS.

I got my MN and after a clip or so of trying to figure out the elevation.

I like that. I wanna keep it. Especially since my eyes are such that I was aiming at a 'dark spot' in the grass.

I hope there's no pitting. I just wanna get out the raised bumps of rust that seem to be here and there.

Forget stainless steel brushes. They are hard and bad for your barrel. A good copper brush will remove the surface rust and it's too late to worry about the pitting. Pitting is forever and a pitted barrel can still shoot well. If you're getting good groups, don't worry about it.

If you're shooting surplus ammo with mecuric salts in the priming compound, then you should look into a British Armourer's funnel for the SMLE. It's a galvanized steel affair, flat on one end with a bent spigot to fit into the receiver. With it you can pour hot water into the barrel without fear of wetting the stock.

Humm, I was advised by a very knowledgable Smith in Colorado to use SS for rust. I was told to make complete passes and not stop...You don't scrub the heck out of it, maybe 2 or 3 passes then go to the copper or brass.

Didn't seem to hurt mine.

Garts or Sportsmen's Warehouse has them.

:)

Was going to "fix" it anyway. I want to make it my favorite rifle, so I'll just shine up the dull parts of the blueing, fill in the dents and give it a new finish that doesn't leave me with cosmolene cheek. I just wanna get rid of the rust instead of 6 months down the road having all my work got to pot.

Please don't misunderstand me....I stated to get the rust out 2 or 3 passes and them on the the brass or copper...if the Barrel was indeed that rusted.

As for cleaning, to be honest most of the time I use the Nylon brushes but then again I clean after every session or so.

I have only used the SS brush on one barrel for a SK's and it was abused before I got it.

Sorry you thought I meant too use one all the time  no, I am really not into smooth bores

DO NOT use stainless brushes.

They'll end up scratching the bore, causing LOTS of copper fouling.

If a gunsmith recommended one, I'll bet that he's heavy into pistols or shotguns, and not into accurate rifles.

Or he sells a lot of rebarrel jobs...

Ok

I went to a store downtown and got a .270 brush.

TOO BIG!

By then I was all the way at home and the closest store had only .22.
I tried that without much success. I'll have to go back and get a .243 brush since I can still see some flecks.
