Tommorrow I am going to look at a milled receiver Russian SKS with a fixed 10 round magazine that I am considering purchasing. I've been emailed a picture of it and it appears to be in very good shape. It has a laminate stock and a blade bayonette. I will be able to fire a couple of rounds through it while I'm there. I am very new to the SKS. I know that the Russian is best, but other than that I know nothing (best Sargent Schultz voice).

What should I look for?
Where are all of the serial numbers that I should check?
Any markings I should look for?
Any worn parts I should look for?

Thanks for the help guys.

Come on guys I need help. Surely a few of you know about SKS'?

For good info on the SKS go to the following link: http://pub7.ezboard.com/bsurvivorssksboards.html

Those guys know EVERYTHING about the SKS. Helped me alot when I was getting started. The Russians are considered the best although just about any SKS (like any AK-47) will function well. I have a Chicom SKS which, while not as pretty as a Russian, functions flawlessly. As for what to look for, check the general appearance and look for wear in the receiver/bolt area and, of course, check out the bore. But check the SKS website and post your question there. You will get lots of help.

Serial numbers are clearly punched on every component and easily noticed. In my opinion, SKSs are so plentiful that you should only purchase one with all matching numbers.

Make sure to ask if the trigger group has ever be filed. You don't want something that has been tampered with trying to make it into an automatic.

Other than that must make use of the internet and read a ton about the firing pin block, care and feeding of the barrel and gas tube, and have a great time.

I love my SKS and enjoy shooting it alot.
It's cheap to keep, too.

Email me if you have any specific questions.
