Russian SKS C&R eligible??

I have someone who is looking to sell me a Russian SKS... I have not even talked to him yet, all I know is it is unfired. What I was wondering is if this thing is C&R eligible? Anyone know? Aside from making sure it does not have a detachable mag or making him remove it (I am in CA) I don't know if there is any difference from a Romanian SKS which is definitely C&R legal.. I will call the CA DOJ, but I wanted to check and see if anyone here knew first..

Thanks!!

Frenchy... as long as they do not have detachable mags they are legal. They sell em at all the gun shows here and I just had SOG ship one to my house 2 weeks ago. When they had the "buy back" all you had to do to keep your SKS was to remove the detachable mag and put on a non detachable mag and it was legal.

C&R guns, in general, seem to be exempt from the bans. C&R SKS' (Romanian) are on sale at Turner's this week for $180, complete with bayonet, mounted.

Destructo6..

That is a horrid price on SKS for your info. I got a Romanian SKS from SOG 2 weeks ago on sale for $119.95, they sell em regularly for $139.95. In fact if you look in Shotgun News you will see quite a few dealers selling good-very good Romanian SKS's for $135-139 with Centerfire Systems selling some for $114.97 with cracked or repaired stocks.

While we are on this.. what is the going rate for a Russian SKS???

Yep, Turner's is a retail outlet and they charge retail prices. They just so happen to be 1 mile away from my home, so I frequent them. I don't have a C&R license, so I'm stuck dealing with retailers. I've purchased a few guns from them in the past and I've always been satisfied. It's also nice to be able to handle and inspect the rifle before buying.

I thought about buying one anyway, just to have one of those ultra-evil SKS's. Well, that and I need something to burn up my stash of 7.62x39 after sending my AK(s) off to better surrounds...

Destructo6.. all very valid points. Having the dealer nearby is well worth it!

Get yourself a C&R license, it's only $30 for 3 years.

The problem is, in Kalifornia, a C&R license doesn't buy you much, the state restrictions don't exempt C&R FFL holders from a lot of the waiting periods and background checks. Funny thing is, you have a C&R license in California, you still can't make use of it to buy a Ballester Molina, Makarov, Luger, Broomhandle, or other C&R eligible pistols without also jumping through California DOJ hoops. I waited until I moved to Florida last year before I got my C&R FFL, I even transported over 300 30-round AK47 mags out of the Sacramento area for a buddy who couldn't leave Kalifornia yet...

Wedge - Per CA law, the rifle MUST be more than 50 years old to qualify for direct acquisition by a class 03 holder.

For an excellent summary of CA specific laws regarding C&R's check out - http://www.empirearms.com/cal-ffl.htm

Of course, such stringent laws are why we have no crime here.

Gewehr98- Yes a C&R license in itself does not skip any of the waiting periods at all. A C&R license with a COE (Certificate of ELigibility) however (just got my COE in mail yesterday) allows you to do the following in CA:

1. Skip the 10 day waiting period on any C&R handguns you buy in the state (as C&R handguns still have to go through the 10 day BS)
2. Allows you to buy more than one handgun (modern or C&R) in a 3o day period..

Yeah I know in just about every other state you can do this with any weapong, but not in CA.. here we need a freaking certificate and pay $70 a year to be able to do that.. damn liberals..

Cliff- It does not NECESSARILY have to be 50 years old or older, there are quite a few weapons the on the C&R list that are not 50 years old such as Makarovs and SKS's.

Wedge - You're referring to the BATF list, and you are correct about the Makarovs, etc.

Unfortunately, CA doesn't use the BATF list as their sole criteria for what is designated as a C&R firearm.

The info is in the link I posted, or call the CA DOJ if you are in doubt.

Ok, but the SKS and Makarov are CA C&R eligible. If you want you can call em, although the DOJ has been known to give out erroneous info before.

Of course, it depends on which Mak you're talking about. Some are not C&R elegible at all.

The East German and the original Russian Military Makarov (with fixed sights) are the only C&R Maks!

ooppsss... sorry I should have been more clear, yeah only the Russian and East German Mak's are C&R eligible. The Bulgarians are not.

California does recognize the BATF C&R list as the sole criteria for determining a firearm's C&R status. They just don't allow you to receive one from out of state unless it is a rifle or shotgun over 50 years old. They use this same criteria to allow private party sales within the state without a C&R license.

Well it turned out to be a Tula arsenaled SKS and the guy wanted $300-400 for it. I am gonna pass on that. Thanks for all the help!
