Since I got tha Nagant carbine which would shoot the same round as this...it's sitting at $290 at this time.

What is something like this worth?

got a couple [apparently] 20 round mags and two 10rounders for it...what about finding more mags?

It's a Tokarev BTW.

Seems like a decent deal to me (similar operating system to FN FAL) *but* these guns were built so light that reliability could be an issue. Getting parts for them may be hard. At $290 I'd grab it *if* I had interest in odd historic goodies (such as Ross rifle, Mondragon). It is not so much a viable defense gun as a great trivia piece. Light weight migh work in its favor for hunting uses.

Good lord, $290 is LOW. Check the barrel. Make sure it has good rifling. Many are badly rotted. If it has strong rifling, I'd buy it. They're pretty good guns, but they kick. Especially the earlier thin-stock model. Value for a good one is generally around $450. Mags are almost impossible to get. There's a story there, but the bottom line is extra mags are about $100 a crack.

The SVT is actually quite reliable and easy to maintain. It's primary weak point is the flimsy stock on the early ones. The later models have a heavier stock, but it's not an M1 regardless. Don't buttstroke people with it. Mags are 10rd. Period.

My SVT40 is actually an SVT38 conversion. It shoots very well, often about 2-2.5" at 100 yds with irons. That's with surplus Russian '80s vintage ball. Sight regulation is perfect. It kicks though and has a savage muzzle blast. The muzzle brakes on these guns are very effective and LOUD.

Personally, if the one you've examined has a good bore, I'd buy it on the spot.

Mags go for $150 ea + (SA marked go for more)
I have an SVT40 and yes they are nice. Length of the rifle is about the same as the m1891 rifle
