Russian Magnifier Optic?

Hey all I remember posting a long while back about magnifying an EoTech/Red dot and what were the decent brands. I remember a kind of homely Russian optic that was used on RPGs? that many people had good luck with...

I can't quite remember the name. "Po Boy?" or something?

I really hope someone knows what I am talking about I lost my bookmark when my tower died.

You're referring to the Hensoldt magnifiers.

They had a crosshair reticle, but some companies removed them. LaRue Tactical took the things, removed the reticle, purged it with nitrogen, and resealed the things, then mating them to a flip to side mount... they called it their Po' Boy magnifier and sold for $200. The idea was you'd get one of these and on down the road you could swap out the cheapo 2x Hensoldt in favor of a real Aimpoint or EOTech branded one, keeping the mount to use with the new one.

They're long since gone now- they sold out a couple or three years ago. I had ordered one right as they ran out, then a few months later LaRue came through and sent the thing. They're OK... not near as good as a real Aimpoint, but on the same mount the Aimpoint 3x cost another $450 or so.

The only way you'll find one now is if somebody who has one decides to sell it.

What's wrong with a relatively cheap(not bottom barrel) magnifier? It doesn't have to hold zero. I'm sure the expensive ones will give you a clearer optic and hold up better over the years, but at the same token you'll pay 4x as much.

I have a cheaper Primary Arms Deluxe magnifier on mine, it looks good and magnifies 3x. I don't see a need to spend more on a magnifier unless i'm going off to war or buying it as a duty magnifier.

As long as it works, it's fine. But as I can say out of my own experience, the Aimpoint magnifier has better clarity, better light gathering, and more lenient eye relief than the Hensoldt. It also looks cooler. :p

But as you say, there's not so much reason to not get something like a Burris or Primary Arms magnifier if the buyer doesn't necessarily want to spend the cash for the big name stuff. Is there a difference between your Primary Arms and my Aimpoint? Dunno... never used one like yours, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't some kind of difference. $400 worth of it? Heh, I'd doubt the Aimpoint does the job 3x as well. But then again, when I mounted it behind a CompM4, I figured I'd spent the cash thus far, may as well go all in.
