Russian intelligence sees U.S. military buildup on Iran border

MOSCOW, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russian military intelligence services are reporting a flurry of activity by U.S. Armed Forces near Iran's borders, a high-ranking security source said Tuesday.

"The latest military intelligence data point to heightened U.S. military preparations for both an air and ground operation against Iran," the official said, adding that the Pentagon has probably not yet made a final decision as to when an attack will be launched.

He said the Pentagon is looking for a way to deliver a strike against Iran "that would enable the Americans to bring the country to its knees at minimal cost."

He also said the U.S. Naval presence in the Persian Gulf has for the first time in the past four years reached the level that existed shortly before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Col.-Gen. Leonid Ivashov, vice president of the Academy of Geopolitical Sciences, said last week that the Pentagon is planning to deliver a massive air strike on Iran's military infrastructure in the near future.

A new U.S. carrier battle group has been dispatched to the Gulf.

The USS John C. Stennis, with a crew of 3,200 and around 80 fixed-wing aircraft, including F/A-18 Hornet and Superhornet fighter-bombers, eight support ships and four nuclear submarines are heading for the Gulf, where a similar group led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has been deployed since December 2006.

The U.S. is also sending Patriot anti-missile systems to the region.

Nothing new here, the Stennis CBG has been in the area for over a month already. The Patriot deployment was announced back in January, around the same time that National Guard deployments were changed from a maximum of two years total to no more than two years at a time.

Ughhh, I hope not. Israel needs to stand on their own two feet and fight their own wars. Especially since, as OBTC points out, they are more than capable of defending themselves at this point.

But on the other hand, I guess I should TRY to see it from the point of view of the politicians - they don't want those millions of rich American Jewish campaign dollars diverted to their opponents, or worse yet, not paid to EITHER party! Be damned what's in OUR interest as Americans. Sure not seein' how Iran is a threat to US..... After all, they're mainly Shia, and the insurgents over in Iraq killing our boys & girls are mainly Sunni, so they have little to no interest in helping the insurgency.

I think one reason we should be concerned about Iran and nukes and nuclear products is that they would most definitely sell them for the right price. If the right offer is made Osama could have the WMD's we were apparently so freaked out Saddam would sell him.

Is it just me or is it de ja vous sans 9/11?

any and all intel that the Russian gather, goes right to Iran. They get the sat photos, the sigint and all the rest.
Russia really, really wants a firm hold on the Middle East. They failed with Egypt and Syria, now they are courting Iran.

hee hee Russian Intelligence....
It was the muzzie who happened to look down the valley while he was wiping his butt with pebbles, and saw the dust cloud risng in the distance.
They know its only a matter of time before we stop "asking" that the rat lines be shut down.

I probably have a case of the terminal stupids but could someone please explain

Let's see...

Just from what I know via public information about them, Iran...
  • has been providing equipment and explosives to Iraqi combatants
  • has provided some personnel to fight the new government
  • Recently claimed to have test fired a long range missle (disputed by the west)
  • Repeatedly has been telling the U.N. Nuke inspectors to kiss their butts.
  • Claims they want Nuke-generated electricity when they sit on an ocean of oil reserves.
  • Recently detained 15 U.K. navy personnel who were in international waters.
  • Refused diplomatic contact with the 15 sailors
  • Known to have purchased Chinese versions of Harpoon anti-ship missles.
  • has a leader that advocates wiping another country off the map.

Given that they have been sanctioned by the U.N. (whoopee) on the Nuke thing, their latest seizure of 15 British sailors is just adding some kerosene to the fire. Britian has already said that they are considering "other measures" to get their people back and it wouldn't surprise me to find that the U.S. is preparing logistical and air-superiority support.

The problem with rattling sabers and waving them about is that someone is likely to get cut, which starts the battle.

NukeJim,

I think Mark_B was implying that "Russian Intelligence" consisted of a Muslim ("muzzie") goat herder near the border who observed lots of dust on the horizon. The reference to rat-lines, I believe, refers to the smuggling routes used to bring weapons and anit-Iraqi personnel into Iraq.

Of course this ignores the fact that historically the Russian intelligence service has been pretty good about collecting information from the west.

It's about time the Iraq-Iranian border had some troops stationed on it.
Just a few yrs and a few thousand lives too late. Maybe if the Iraq borders and towns were secured as the US troops went thru, there wouldn't be so many deaths today.
Someone should have told Bush that getting to Baghdag in a hurry wouldn't win the war.

Yes that pretty well summs it up. My post was probably a bit too snide for responsible debate......sorry....
My derision of Russain Intel in this particular instance, relates to the obvious fact that after cleaning out Baghdad, our next step will be to focus military attention on the Iraq/Iran border, and the fact that this story is comming from a Russian newspaper.
The reference to pebbles comes from an admonition to muslims to wipe their butts with (three)? pebbles while facing away from Meca...something I've always found to be quite rediculous. I will refrain from making such snide comments in the future.
My brother has done several stints in Iraq over the last three years and the guys on the ground have always known where the car bombs have come from. The group he is in has had a saying for the last few years; "For every IED/VBIED that goes off in Iraq, Two cruise missles should land in Teheran.

Maybe. A bunch of those folks are relatively innocent, but we've done it before to Germany, Japan and in SE Asia.

we've done it before to Germany, Japan....."

IIRC we gave Japan several chances to give up before the big A was deployed over Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

But yes we did bomb several cities that had innocent civillians working in factories that we blew up.

Although there were those firebombings of a few non-military cities and towns in Germany. IMHO I think it was a serious screw up of the oxymoronic "military intelligence" that caused so much unwonton destruction and death.

Ah to heck with it it was a war and people die in war. It's inevitable and those bombs don't really care what they land on.

Edit: "Somewhere out there somebody has a bullet with your name on it. Now they may or may not know they have it but the trick is to die of old age first." - "Malcom Renolds" fictional character, Firefly

Gulf of Tonkin revisited

Just how the Vietnam war was started. Did you know that if some one invaded us we don't have enough troops to protect our country. They are all over seas. That means UN troops would to be called.
