Rural Wal-Mart goes politically correct!

Last weekend, I took my son to little ole Elizabethtown, KY to spend a couple of weeks with his Grandparents. Went to the Wal-Mart super store to get a few things, and cruised through sporting goods.

Imagine my surprise when I found no guns in the gun rack! Asked the guy at the counter about it, and he said management decided not to stock any guns. Still had ammo, targets, cleaning supplies, etc.

To increase my surprise, my local Wal-Mart in suburban Atlanta still had guns as recently as 6-7 weeks ago.

'Sup wid dat? Anyone have any ideas? Is Wally World going politically correct on us? Enquiring minds want to know!

If they are, then it's time we put pressure on them like we did to K-Mart ;)

"what gives a government that arms the whole world the right to disarm it's own citizens?"

Hmmm.

My local Wally World recently reconfigured the store. During the time they were putting in the new displays, they took the gun cabinet down. Something like 3 weeks or so.

When they got done it made the rifles a lot more accessible though. They're on turntable type displays rather than stuck against a wall.

Maybe that's what's up.

Every Wallmart I've been to in NJ and even some in NH (All new stores) have NO GUNS or even ammo. Paintball is about it.

So, it's okay to let people to shoot each other with non-lethal paintball guns, but the proper use of real firearms is verboten? Sounds logical to me.

Wally World in Las Cruces, NM still has full case of rifles, from .22's to Mini-14's to Bolt actions and shotguns.

LevelHead,
Every Wallyworld I've been to here in NH has guns and ammo. Which one(s) did you visit? The stores in Amherst, Salem, Derry, Rindge, and Portsmouth are the ones I have seen. The clerks haven't been too helpfull or knowledgeable though.

It could be the States laws. Some states are getting so bad that even displaying a "gulp" firearm is verbotten. I used to work for Wal-Mart as a kid, and I got to meet the founder of the stores, and this would not be his wish. He died and now his kids run the place (the last I heard). I don't know if they are pro or getting anti. When I was a kid, they actually had "gulp" handguns on display. Then they went to special orders (because of the backgroud checks with the "puke" brady law) and then stopped. Now, since all guns have to be cleared through nics, if Sam was still alive, I could see him bringing handguns back into the stores. The only store that I've every physically seen with a No CCW sign posted was in Va (sorry, drawing a blank on area but it shares it's city with Tenn. it's right on the boarder). So everyone went to the Tenn. side to that Wal-Mart to buy things. From what I'd heard, it was a "management" thing, not a common policy with the main company. But that was years ago (that I worked for them) so I don't know what their policies are now. I hope they aren't going stupid, I really like that store. USP45usp

I don't think this is a State law issue. KY is reasonably gun-friendly, especially by the standards of, say, PRMA, PRK, PRNJ, Etc.

And Jack99, I've seen the new format in some stores mentioned here before, but I don't think that was it in this case. The display case for the guns wasn't gone, it just didn't have any guns in it.

The problem is probably with the manager or the district manager. They choose what goes in the store and what doesn't. It's sad but you probly got an anti district manager and he/she decided they didn't need gun sales to make it. Call that 1-800-Wal-Mart. Complain and tell them how you feel and have your friends do the same. They really do take opinions from that number and they will either fix the problem or give you an explanation as to why they have decided to become morons.

I don't get into WalMarts too much, but the last time I was in one the rifles and shotguns were there (this is in northern KY) so it isn't a state thing.

HUKE hit it on the nose, district managers are allowed to alter store content based on what the feel is selling in the local market. CALL THEM ON IT!

Sam Walton was VERY pro-gun. You may want to check and see if they still have their firearms catalog. ALL Wal-Mart stores are supposed to have it unless forbidden by law! And if they only have the catalog, there is supposed to be an obvious sign stating that they have firearms available through a catalog order system . Don't roll over and take it, let them hear you!

I thought I'd seen it all, until a 22WMR spun a bunny 2 1/4 times in the air!

I was at the WalMart in Ashland, Ky, it is a Supercenter open 24 hours, and they had the new style upright rifle racks in the freestanding corner display cases. If the store you went to may be scheduling a remodel, the one near me in Indianapolis is doing this right now, they may get guns back. It may be a sales issue. If there are a number of good local gun shops in town they my not have high enough sales to justify wasting the floor space for guns that are on display and never sell. The space can be put to better use for another product. I would try to find out the reason for their absence.

I had been spying one of the Mossberg 500 'Persuader' 12 ga. in the Walmart in SE Ala. About the time I decide to go get one, the manager of that dept told me they would no longer be stocking that one. They do still have rifles and hunting shotguns and ammo.

Even here in Taxachsetts the wal-marts sell rifles and shotguns. The one near my town sold wrist-rockets(sling-shots) until they realized they were illegal in Mass. Can you believe that? I bought a Remington 870 when I was 18 but I wasn't allowed a slingshot.
You need an ltc to buy an air pistol. Sweet huh.

Uniontown Pa stocks rifles and ammo, they get very cagey when you ask about handguns, but I guess that's the same in any Wally W.

I especially like the counter clerk though, she apologizes every time I buy UMC ammo, only UMC though, nothing else. It usually starts out as , "sorry, we only have that UMC stuff.....", a lady who knows her ammo, priceless.
