If you can legally buy a rifle or shotgun just go to the gun store, fill out the same 4473 you would for any other rifle or shotgun, pay for it and take it home. Its just like any other rifle. Now if yo want one that is full auto, there's a lot more forms, waiting time, and you better bring a LOT more cash.

Here are the steps required to buy an AR-15 in Texas.
a. Pick out one that you want.
b. Fill out NICS form (4473).
c. Have dealer call in for approval.
d. When approval is received, pay money and walk out with the AR-15.
It took me 15 minutes to get mine, and this was when the AWB was in effect. Hopefully you don't get delayed by NICS and have to wait a little longer.

CHL - no NICS call in.
Go to any gunshow and see rows of them. I guess civilization hasn't ended because we can have shorter stocks, etc.
