Ruger vs Taurus

I'm looking to purchase my first wheel gun. Right now my two choices are the Taurus 605 and the Ruger SP101, both in .357. I know they are two differently made guns but they both fit the size that I am looking for. I know Taurus doesn't have a great reputation throughout the years but how much can go wrong with a five shot wheel gun? Can anyone pass on some advice that has compared the two. I have heard that the Taurus has much more recoil than the Ruger. The prices between the two are at least a hundred bux, The Taurus at $235.00 and the Ruger over $300.00 I also am open to other .357 snubbies if anyone has any recomendations.

Roger, Im very happy with my Taurus revolver. Its a .17HMR but I had it apart and its built nice.. Shoots fantastic..

Well it doesn't matter how many rounds it holds as the mechanism is the same across the board. Between the two of them? Get the Ruger. Resale value as well as durability are both better than Taurus. Not to mention if something would go wrong with it, Ruger is an almost guaruntee to fix it, fix it right, and fix it fast. I guess most importantly handle both side by side and work the action. Personally if it was up to me I'd take a S&W over both :D .

I also like to add that every Taurus has a LIFETIME warranty on anythign on the gun.. I do not think Ruger does.. 3 years down the road, break the taurus.. send it back to be fixed for free. Can you do that with a Ruger?? Something to think about.. Taurus does stand behind their guns..

You have a point Taurus has a Lifetime warranty and what not but they rarely stand behind there guns and it takes for ever and unlike the taurus, with a ruger you mostlikely wont need a warranty, and for arguments sake No ruger doesnt have a written warranty but they will stand behind there guns and fix them the same. Id take the ruger hands down. I have both of the exact guns, The taurus timing has gone off and never had a problem with any of my ruger.

Send your Taurus back and wait, than send it again. Ruger has always stood behind thier products regardless of the stated warranty.

My Taurus M85 Ultra-Lite locked up after the first round fired out of it, and kept on locking up. I sent it back under Taurus' "Lifetime" Warranty. There's a reason they make it a "Lifetime" warranty. That's because it's going to take most of YOUR lifetime for them to finally fix it correctly! And, they make YOU pay for shipping to them, no matter how many times they don't fix it when you return it. Taurus told me that they would not even consider replacement of the gun until they have ATTEMPTED to fix it at least four times.

They may advertise a warranty, but it's useless. Their customer service is the worst in the industry.

I sent back an Old Model Super Blackhawk because it had been shot loose. It was the last year production of the Old Model (1972). That was the same year I was born, so it was obvious I was not the original owner. I called them after about a week of not hearing from them so I could give them my CC info for the repairs. They told me that the repairs were completed, no charge, and it would be shipped out that day. They even paid for the return shipping.

A warranty is only as good as the company who offers it. Taurus can play the ad campain BS of a "Lifetime" warranty, but they don't stand behind it. Ruger, on the other hand, advertises no warranty, but will fix anything you send back to them. Unless it was seriously abused, overcharged, etc, it will be fixed.

Ruger, along with S&W, have the best customer service in the industry. That's why I buy only from those two companies. If they are willing to support me like that, I'll gladly do the same for them.

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess Taurus is out now..lol..Any other affordable .357 snubbies out there I should consider?

Taurus warranty

I have had two M605 Tauri.
The first one, which I eventually sold to get my wife a KT P32, had a pin come out while I was shooting out in the desert. I sent it back to Taurus and called them to see how long it would take to fix it. The nice man on the other end of the line said it would take three weeks!! Lo and behold, on the 21st day, my repaired 605 was delivered by the kind man in the brown truck!!
I never had another problem with it!!
I was impressed enough that I bought another!!!
No problems with it!!!
Maybe I was just lucky. ;)

I've just purchased a Taurus model 65 .357 about a month ago. Put about 400 rounds through it without a hitch. Goes bang everytime although the trigger is still a bit rough.

My brother has the same model and after about 6 years of shooting he started getting light strikes on the primers. He sent it in to Taurus, had it back in 1 week and has never had a problem with it since.

I think you could find horror stories for both ruger and taurus - I also think you take a chance you'll get a lemon when you buy ANY gun. I had a lemon Kimber .45 ($730!!) - wound up selling it for $400 because it just wasn't reliable. Company told me to goto m1911.org instead of sending it in for them to fix it! haha, I learned an expensive lesson that time.

exactly. I know 2 guys who have had GREAT Taurus customer service in my area.. Don't count them out just because you have a few bad experiences. Ill show you people who have had bad experiences with any company. It happens sometimes.. My Dad for one. With Toyota. The best car manufacture in the world(so some say) and he wil never buy another.

I agree about the SP101. I've always been a S&W fan when it comes to wheelguns, and autos for the most part, too, but I tried out my friend's SP101 .357mag with a 3-1/4" barrel. The only thing I can say is "I want one."

It's definately going to be my next purchase.

You are right, some people have great luck with Taurus. Not me. They will never get another penny of my money, and I'm going to make sure everyone knows the story behind it, too. Same goes for when a company does right by me, like S&W and Ruger.
