Ruger Super Redhawk, any good?

I have a chance to buy a used Super Redhawk in 44 Mag, SS, with a 7.5 inch barrel. It also comes with scope rings. I would be paying $350 for it. My questions:

Is the Redhawk any good and is this an OK price?
Can the barrel be changed out for a shorter one, or are they permanent?
Is a 7.5 inch barrel too unweildy?

I was going to use this as a backup for hog hunting and also maybe for a car/home gun for SD. Obviously, this would not be for CC.

Comments?

The price can't be beat. A new one right out of the box will cost you around $600.

The Redhawk is an excellent gun -- in any caliber. And no, it's not a Dan Wesson, the barrel's on there for keeps. As far as a 7.5" barrel being "too unweildy", I woudn't say so -- not for your intended use (home defense) anyway.

I've got a 5.5" redhawk (not srh, the original one) and I almost wish I went with the 7.5" barrel. If I don't end up with a 7.5" SRH or redhawk, I will have an 8" smith. The weight is great when shooting .44 magnum.

Do you mean Blackhawk .44? Is there a Redhawk .44 too? I just got a .44 Blackhawk for right about $350. Excellent action. Accurate too.

i have a Ruger SRH .44mag with the 9-1/2" barrel and i love it. paid $400 or $425, i can't remember because i looked at quite a few used (most like new)ones. great for hunting or just making some noise at the range. the SRH in Super Redhawk could be applied as 'Super Rugged Handgun'. :D

edit: there is a sticky at the top of this forum for checking out a handgun before you buy.

Sounds good

Sounds like it would be a good price then. I think I'll get it. For home defense, would the 44 special loads be best?

Also, I have never shot a 44 magnum. Is it as bad as everyone says? I have shot 357 mag loads, but I gather these are much more substantial than 357.

I heard horror sotories whn I was young about people getting their wrist broken, etc. because of 44 magnums. I am approximately 240 lbs and 6 ft tall.

Buddy, you're fine.

Especially with a 7.5" barrel.

That's the great thing about the rugers, is they are so dang heavy. They soak up the recoil.

I'm not saying it's comparable to a .22 or anything, but it isn't all that fierce.

I'm about 6'2" and 190lbs dripping wet. I love shooting my .44.

i think i would prefer specials for HD due to less kick (quicker follow ups) and less collateral damage. i like a shotgun though.

Good price, good gun. I bought a very nice used one a couple years back with the 9 1/2 inch barrel and topped with a 2x leupold scope. 500 out the door. I stand about 5' 9" and 160 soaking wet, got no problems shooting it.

44Mag Love It

Hey,
Last year 05, year got a Super Red Hawk 44 Mag. and added a 4 x 28 Leupold.
Always wanted to hunt deer with a hand gun,now after 30 years of hunting with a rifle I'm a hand gun hunter
Loaded up some Nosler 250 gr partitions, haven't shot a deer with this load.
Should be a great load, what do ya'll think?
