Ruger Super Blk hawk 5 shot 454 & 480

Is this new? I did not know Ruger made a 5 shot bigger bore Blackhawk.

It is listed as a Lipsey special production. The wood grips seemed like a little to little, but the basic gun looks interesting. I dont see a price, but this has to be a big discount over the Super Redhawk. I like the weight and grips on the super red, but here is a gun I though I read others were pining over on the web. Not necessarily here. But FYI.

It's not that new, but a cool hunting revolver.

I'd much rather have a standard Blackhawk or flat top for most other chores.
 
The .480 and .454 Super Blackhawk Bisleys were released about two years ago, I believe.

I don't know if production numbers were low, shipments were delayed, or they just sold like hotcakes. But I could never find one when I was looking for a .480. I can't say that I tried terribly hard, though, as I'm not much of a fan of the Bisley grip on a single-action.

For me, it's a moot point, though. I tracked down one of the early 6-shot SRHs in .480 at well under SBH Bisley retail. Between it and the .44s, I'm covered for hand cannons.
 
I was thinking about the Bisley grip too. I bet a standard grip frame could be purchased from Ruger and Hogue grips installed. That in a 454, perhaps. They are still cataloged. I guess I am late to this party too.

Ah, ah, now I see my problem. When I joined the forum I did not setup my preferences. The forum default does not show older threads. Very few in fact. I changed that to all posts and now there are hundreds of pages of information instead of just two.

Released last August and they've sold like hot cakes. I ended up with one of each but had to wait in line for them. Both great shooters.

The Bisley is infinitely better than a standard grip frame with rubber grips. :rolleyes:

Super Blackhawks do not come with rubber grips.
I believe you're thinking of the smaller Blackhawk grip frame and horrible 'hard rubber' grip panels that come on plain, blued models. There's nothing good about that combination, at all. (My opinion.)

The standard 'plow handle' Super Blackhawk grip frame is larger in almost every way, and has a much better shape to the factory grip panels (always has).


Though still the smaller grip frame, some other models in the Blackhawk line are much better due to better grip panels.

The only difference with the Super grip frame is that it is about a quarter inch longer than the standard Blackhawk grip frame.

All Ruger factory grip panels are atrocious compared to a properly designed set of custom stocks.
 
I was thinking about something like Hogue rubber or better yet Pachmyer wrap around decelerator grips. I have big hands. Wood panels steel back strap seem unnecessarily harsh for 454 or 480. I have big hands so big rubber on a big grip frame would suit me.

If they sold out the 5 shots that fast, I expect they will do it again.
 
Just be careful about a standard grip. Ruger Blackhawks come with Tin grips, the 44 Special, SBH, and Bisley's are Steel. Tin grips won't last very long with those two high power cartridges.
 
From what I'm seeing on other boards, both of these seem to have/had issues with severely pitted bores & over clocked barrels.
