Ruger Super Blackhawk Grip Question

Let me start off by saying great forum. Very informative.

Just bought a Ruger Super Blackhawk unfluted 4 5/8" 44 mag in SS (KS 458N)and want to get a Pachmayr or some kind of cool exotic wood grip for it. Can you guys post some pics of the 4 5/8 models with your grips?

Sorry, I don't have any pics, but I do have a couple of thoughts.

First, before you spend a lot of money on something like the Pachmayr grips, see if you can actually find a Super Blackhawk that has a pair of them already installed. Actually handle it to see how it feels. To me, these make the grip far to large. I find them to be very uncomfortable. My Super Blackhawk fits my hand much better with factory style grips. I have average size hands though. If you have larger hands ,the Pachmayr style may be the way to go. If your gun feels comfortable as is, Hogue makes some very nice grips that are the same size as the factory grips. Their web address is www.getgrip.com. I'm not trying to talk you out of anything, just offering some advice. At any rate, Congratulations on buying a good revolver.

Good Shooting!

I really like the look of the Pachmayr as it would look very close to the Freedom Arms 4 3/4" models. They seem to look really heavy duty that way. You make a good point about making the grip to big, I'll have to look around. Thx

wood grips look nice but there isn't any way I would shoot a superblackhawk without Pachmayr grips on it. I have put Pachmayr grips on every Ruger single action (I have had four)I have ever bought before I even shot the gun

Has anyone used the Butler Creek? Brownells list them(Blackhawks only) as not having finger grooves. Is this true?

I second Steveno on installing pachmayr grips. I fired mine once with the wood grips...to slippy. Mine do not have finger grooves, it is easy to handle without them (finger grips), though.

Couldn't wait to fire it so went ahead and used the factory grip. Shot so good I'm going to leave it stock.

Thanks for the link, nice grips, pricey too. I'm going to stick with the factory Ruger grips. The gun rolls very nice as it is.

Am I the only one who disagrees?

From my experience, I never found a set of Pachmayr grips that I liked. Could be that my first impression was a lasting one, but when it comes to aftermarket grips, I just don't like those Pachmayr's.

Aside from that, my only problem with the Super Blackhawk in recoil was with the trigger guard coming back and kissing my knuckle. That dragoon style guard drew blood nearly every time I fired the gun. This might have something to do with the fact that I was 12 or 13 at the time, but once again - first impressions...! Years later, I fired a FA 454 with the stock grips, and I came to realize just what that style grip was for.

So I say, let that hawgleg roll back in your hand. If you must, dehorn (or replace) that guard, and maybe replace those grips with aftermarket grips, only nicer ones. Ruger does tend to skimp a bit in the grip department. But leave the gun in the original configuration, I think it works better.

Just my opinion, and Good Luck!

Both of my Ruger Single Actions have barrels, wear Herrett grips, and I like the grips. Regards, Richard:D

I seem to handle the recoil better with the factory grips. Without finger groves, the gun rolls in the hand. If you just want different looking factory stocks, try Ajax Grips. They have some nice looking ones.

The factory 4 5/8 Super blackhawk takes the same grips as the standard Blackhawks. Don't buy grips for the SBH unless you have the dragoon trigger guard or the Hunter model.
