Ruger sr9 broken firing pin

I post this as an FYI. I dry fire my handguns regularly, and don't use snap caps. I've never had a problem till today when I went to the range with my sr9 and discovered a broken firing pin. I'm calling ruger tomorrow and will be getting snap caps for 9mm. Just posting to help someone else avoid the same issue. May or may not be related to dry firing but I'm betting it is.

The manual discourages dry firing the SR series without the magazine in place. Remove the magazine disconnect(easy) and there's no problem.

What of the five parts that make up the striker assembly broke, exactly?
Curious minds want to know.

That's usually where firing pins and strikers seem to fail when they do.
Makes sense as the tip gets the most action.
Sounds like a part manufacturing problem, more than dry firing, especially since the mag disconnect has been removed.
Be nice if Ruger would send you a new one without having to send the gun to them.

I have the compact model. I can't begin to say how many thousands of times I have dry fired this pistol without snap caps. It is my primary carry gun and I dry fire and shoot it regularly. I would guess you had a flawed striker.

same as K Mac, I have the SR9C with well over 1000 rounds through it and several hundred dry firings, I removed the mag disconnect early on due to light strikes and have yet to lose a firing pin. I also have a Ruger 9E but it's still working on less than 200 rounds as of yet so I can't comment on it's reliability to date.

still, Ruger stands behind their guns 100%, they'll make it right, however don't hold your breathe on getting a new striker set to you, very few manufacturers trust end users to replace their own parts in any industry these days, especially so with the firearms industry. you'll have to send the gun back and you'll likely get it back with a new mag disconnect in place as well.

1 day turn around. I will pick it up on Friday. Ruger replaced a lot of items, including the magazine disconnect that I removed. They said they repaired/replaced the barrel. I told them there was nothing wrong with the barrel. The list of parts replaced sounded extensive. I had previously sent in a mini 14 for repair and it also had a large list of parts replaced. I suspect that ruger doesn't investigate the issue and simply goes through a standard rebuild process which may vary by weapon.

When I get the pistol back I will list all parts replaced.

Items replaced:
Magazine disconnect
Slide stop assembly
Striker assembly
Striker blocker
Trigger assembly
Trigger bar lift spring
Trigger bar reset
Ejector
Fire control housing
Safety thumb lever

Items repaired:
Barrel

Test fired 75 rds of black hills 115gr Fmj
"For your safety ruger recommends not removing any of the parts installed for safety purposes"

As mentioned I did remove the magazine disconnect. While I haven't fired it yet, the pistols trigger reset is noticeably shorter and much better. They did remove my ghost rocket trigger bar but included it with the pistol.

Very pleased with ruger cs. Seems they did much more than was required.
