Ruger SR9 Beginner Pistol

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to potentially buy my first pistol. It is only going to be a range gun so I'm looking for a full sized gun.

I saw CDNN had a great Ruger SR9 deal for 329+shipping which seemed to be way better than anything else in the price range. I plan on shooting it this weekend. Unfortunately, all the other full sizes at my range are going to be out of my price range (Glock, Springfield XD, FN FNX-9).

I've shot the FN FNX-9 at a range in Texas which was really quite great, but I felt that my hands started to lose grip of it when I started to sweat. I also got repeatedly hit in the face with shells (it was a rental though so maybe it wasn't in good condition). I've heard the Ruger SR9 has a slimmer grip so I am starting to lean towards that now, especially at that price point.

I can't try the S&W M&P 9 at the range, but they do have the M&P 9 Compact and Shield which I could try as well, but I figure they won't be very similar to the full size as far as feel?

In summary, I am pretty sure the SR9 is the pistol to get at 330, but are there any other pistols in this price range that you would recommend?

Thanks!

I wasn't aware an SR9e even existed. I think it is the SR9 because the model number matches up.

The Ruger American looks awesome, but I'm fairly certain it will be out of my price range.

The Ruger SR9 is a great pistol for the money. It's a pretty great pistol regardless of the price in my experience. No, it's not a Glock or any other more common pistol. It's kind of off in a world all it's own. But they shoot well, feel good, and are reliable. I'd actually be very happy to have one myself. I think it would make a great first pistol (aside from buying a .22 lr, which you absolutely should to build your skills, and just for fun.)

I have a feeling your going to get it. So enjoy;)

Haha, I just hope the sale lasts til Friday.

I would buy a .22 LR, but I am pretty sure I am only going to buy one pistol in the near future, and I'd rather get a 9mm than a .22 LR.

Thanks for the comments guys!

The SR9 was the first gun I ever bought. I ended up trading it for a Sig 226 but only because I always wanted a 226

The SR9 is a very nice gun

It was my first gun. I cant recommend it. There are much better choices perhaps not at that price but in the long run you'd be much happier

Ruger 22LR pistols are popular in terms folks searching for accessories at the shows. Not much interest for the center fire pistols.

If it's your first pistol, it really doesn't matter all that much what it is.
Especially if it's going to be the only one you have.
You will quickly get used to it, whatever it is.
The SRs are as good as anything else.
No reason not to buy it.

My first gun was an SR9c I absolutely loved it, it came with a light and i got it for right at $400. As far as a budget full size 9mm, its hard to beat.

For your price range i would suggest an EAA SAR B6P, Canik TP9SA or the Ruger sr9/sr9e. The advantage of the ruger over the other two is the company its coming from. All three are outstanding guns for the money. Sounds like the CDNN price is a great deal. The only negative about the SR9 is the price of extra mags. I dont like to spend more than $25 on pistol mags and the SR mags come in at about $40 a piece. sometimes you can get a 2 pack for $60ish

I am leaning pretty heavily towards the SR9 now.

My friend recommended the Beretta 92, but I don't think I'm gonna get one for under $400.

I guess one thing I don't understand is the need for so many mags? Aren't two enough?

I'm not going to be carrying the gun on me, and I have to bring unloaded mags to the range anyways.

Magazines tend to wear out faster than the gun and you have to have them for the gun to work. I like to have 5 mags per gun I own and honestly I only use two, I leave one loaded with hollow points and then I use one at the range.

But having extra magazines is very nice in case you have any issues with the ones that it came with, also down the road they may become increasingly harder to find if the company has stopped making the gun, I would rather be stocked with them now and have them when I need them than need them 10 years from now and not be able to find them.

The more mags the better, but if the two are good to begin with, and work as they should, it's very possible you won't actually need any more.
Just keep them clean and maybe change the springs on occasion.
I'm still using the four good quality ones for my go-to-match pistol from twenty years ago.
And with the original springs, even.
Good ones will last.

The Ruger SR9 is a perfectly wonderful gun. Is it the best, most accurate, most reliable, most accessory compatible weapon in the history of firearms? Nope! For the budget and philosophy of use? Great choice.

Its a great gun, its a good choice, go for it!

As far as multiple magazines, the advantages for me are convenience at the range (going back to the table and loading less often.) Also, if you want to do reload drills (fire all your magazine, drop the mag, insert the next, do it again) are a little more fun/easier when you can do multiple drills!

My first three semi-autos came with two magazines apiece. I have been shooting all of them for about 25 years. I have yet to wear out a magazine or have a real need cor more.
